Lost Daniel Faraday

Prof. Daniel Faraday, often referred to as
Dan or simply by his surname, Faraday, is a fictional character on the
ABC television series Lost played by Jeremy Davies. Faraday was
introduced in the season 4 premiere, and is part of the team aboard the
Kahana. Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse called Daniel Faraday "an
obvious shout-out to Michael Faraday, scientist and physicist".Faraday
was originally planned to be a recurring role.
Prior to arrival on the island
After the events of LaFleur, Daniel along with Sawyer, Juliet, Miles,
and Jin are shunted thru time and stranded sometime in 1974. Sawyer is
able to bluff the
Dharma
Initiative of this time into giving his "crew" jobs/positions
within the Dharma Initiative on the island. Daniel would end up
assisting the group in the construction of the Orchid Station. This
appears to have taken place in the late 1970's. Presumably, much of the
information about the Dharma Initiative that Daniel would end up
compiling in his notebook was taken during this period of time. Daniel
would also have some contact with a very young Charlotte Lewis during
this time as well. How Daniel transited from this period to the
future/present has yet to be revealed.
By the early to mid 1990's, Daniel was working as a physicist at The
Queen's College, Oxford via a research grant that was funded completely
by Charles Widmore. During his tenure, Desmond Hume was trapped in a
time traveling loop and was directed by Daniel in 2004 to make contact
with him in 1996. During this encounter, Daniel helped Desmond by
telling him that he would die if he did not find a constant - a
familiar entity which is a part of Desmond's life in the past and
future. He mentioned that he had done things that were 'frowned upon',
namely his time altering experiments. From here, Daniel began
peripherally researching everything he could in order to be ready for
this event, knowing now that consciousness time travel was indeed
possible; by the end of the episode, Daniel was even shown to have
prepared that Desmond would be his "constant" in case anything went
wrong on the island, and also had somehow obtained and put in his
notebook, the entire Secondary Protocol and knew that they had been
activated by the time There's No Place Like Home aired. In the season 5
premiere, Daniel reveals his notebook has a lot of information about
many of the known (and possibly unknown) Dharma Stations on the island.
At some point after his encounter with Desmond, Daniel attempts to do a
still unknown experiment upon a willing human subject. The experiment
fails, resulting in this woman being put in a coma. Faraday is expelled
from Oxford. Charles Widmore was able to keep the entire incident
quickly and quietly being dismissed, with Widmore paying for the
comatose woman's medical expenses, and Oxford quietly removed all
references to Faraday ever being at the university.
While in Essex, Massachusetts, Daniel watched a news report covering
the discovery of the apparent derelict Oceanic Flight 815 in the depths
of the Sunda Trench close to Indonesia. When asked why he was crying by
his caretaker/housekeeper, he replied that he didn’t know.
He was soon after recruited into a covert team alongside Charlotte
Lewis, Miles Straume and Frank Lapidus; organized by the enigmatic
Matthew Abaddon and led by Naomi Dorrit, who described Daniel as a
"head case". Their mission was to travel to the island, to disable the
Dharma Initiative Station: THE TEMPEST, and to confront Ben Linus for
an as of yet unexplained reason.
After the team was assembled they departed for the island in a
helicopter which was struck by lightning. Daniel was the first to
parachute off the chopper after being pushed by Miles.
After arrival on the island
Daniel first arrives on the island on December 23, 2004 after the crash
survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 contact him and his crew on the
freighter. A helicopter sent to fly to the island spots Jack and Kate
in the jungle beside the nose of the plane and immediately dispatches a
parachutist at low altitude. The parachutist introduces himself as
Daniel Faraday to Jack and Kate and tells them he's here to rescue
them.
Jack and Kate notice Daniel's restlessness but agree to help him find
his team. As they voyage through the jungle Jack spots a container with
gas masks inside. Becoming more and more curious, he asks why Daniel
has a gun and receives the response that rescuing the crash survivors
is not the freighter's primary objective. Their conversation is
interrupted by a bleeping on the sat-phone revealing Miles' position at
the island's cove. Upon arriving there an argument breaks out with
Miles pointing a gun at Jack. Daniel tells Miles to calm down and the
situation is resolved by agreeing to take him and Miles to Naomi's
body.
Once there, Daniel makes an interesting observation about the light
scattering on the island strangely. Jack tells Daniel and Miles to put
away their guns because Sayid and Juliet are surrounding them with
weapons. Jack's group is given the upper hand and the guns are taken
from the parachutists. Soon after, the sat-phone picks up what seems to
be Charlotte's position on the island. Daniel and Miles call her name
but instead they find Vincent running through the jungle with
Charlotte's tracker. Jack tells them that Locke has her.
A flare shot into the sky brings the group to Frank's position and the
landing site of the helicopter. Daniel's thought of taking the late
Naomi on-board the chopper is objected by Frank and Miles, saying it's
unnecessary weight. Moments later, Miles is surprised to hear from
Frank that Juliet's name was absent from the Flight 815 manifest. His
"primary objective" is revealed as confronting Benjamin Linus.
Daniel stays back at the landing site while Miles, Kate and Sayid
venture towards the barracks. He uses the sat-phone to contact Regina
and conduct an experiment in which a payload is to be fired to his
position. It eventually arrives 31 minutes after it is expected,
causing Daniel to describe the situation as "not good." Daniel is
offered a ride on the helicopter back to the freighter but he decides
to stay on the island. He advises Frank to stay on the exact same
bearing they were on when they approached the island.
Jack and Juliet escort Daniel and Charlotte back to the campsite along
the beach. While there, they are contacted by Sayid (who has finally
arrived safely on the freighter) and are informed about Desmond who
believes he is bouncing from 1996 to 2004 constantly. Over the
sat-phone, Daniel assists Desmond by telling him to travel to Oxford
University the next time he bounces into the past so that he can seek
help from Daniel in 1996. The advice Daniel gives Desmond in 1996
subsequently saves Desmond's life in 2004. (Refer to Prior to arrival
on the island). Later that day, Daniel is flicking through his diary
and comes across a note saying "If anything goes wrong, Desmond Hume
will be my constant"., indicating that Daniel was prepared for the
contingency of himself suffering from Temporal Displacement himself.
Daniel and Charlotte secretly leave the beach to carry out an unknown
mission. Jin tells Jack he saw them leave earlier, causing Jack to
become frustrated. He asks Jin why he didn't mention this to him
earlier, but is confused and replies "You said...they are friends?"
Juliet claims they are heading for the power station of the island
known as The Tempest after receiving a message from Ben via Harper.
Daniel is later seen with Charlotte in the jungle reading a very vague
and incomplete map with "UNKNOWN?" written multiple times on it. After
getting their bearings Daniel points and says "It's that way". He then
looks distressed by the journey ahead and tells Charlotte "What happens
if I...well...if I can't do it?", but Charlotte assures him that he can
"do this". They are about to head off again when Kate happens upon them
on the way back to the beach after leaving the barracks. Charlotte
claims they left the others at the beach because their sat-phone is
dead and they came to find new batteries in their luggage that was
thrown from the helicopter. Kate sees Daniel's phone has power and is
suspicious. She asks to see their bag which actually contains biohazard
suits. Charlotte pistol whips her in the back of the head knocking her
out, much to Daniel's dismay.
Juliet arrives at The Tempest ahead of Jack to find Daniel in a
biohazard suit typing frantically at a computer terminal. Juliet then
confronts Daniel with a gun, and he states "Juliet, what are you doing
here?", clearly concerned that she is putting herself in danger by
being in the facility without protection. Juliet pulls his mask off and
tells him, "If you want to release the gas you'll die with the rest of
them". Daniel then claims he's not trying to kill anyone, but instead
wants to render the gas inert, to make it safe. Charlotte then attacks
Juliet and they fight frenetically while Daniel types away. The
countdown continues during this time. Charlotte tells Juliet that
they're stopping Ben from using the gas to kill people on the island,
and they're aware that he's used it before. The pressure indicator then
returns from red back into the green area. Daniel states, "That..that
was a close one".
Back at the beach, Daniel is visited by Sun who asks him if he and his
team have come to the island to rescue everybody. Daniel anxiously
replies that it's not his decision and Sun, disappointed, leaves his
presence. Later on, a body washes ashore and Daniel identifies it as
being the doctor from his freighter. To discover what had occurred,
Daniel uses Morse code to contact the ship and ask what happened to the
doctor. The freighter replies saying, "What are you talking about?
Doctor is fine". Daniel lies about the response and tells Jack that the
freighter is sending the helicopters for them in the morning. Bernard,
who can also understand Morse code, reveals that Daniel is lying about
the message, causing Jack to become frustrated with Daniel and ask him
if he's really here to rescue them, to which Daniel regretfully
responds, "No."
The following morning, Jack's sickness grows worse and it becomes vital
for his appendix to be removed. To do so, Juliet entrusts Daniel to
gather necessary instruments from the medical station alongside
Charlotte and Sun; but the "trust" is reinforced by Juliet's sending
Jin along, telling him to shoot Daniel or Charlotte in the leg if they
try to escape. When they arrive at the Staff, Sun remarks that Daniel
likes Charlotte. Daniel successfully obtains all required instruments
and gets them back to Juliet who performs the operation thus saving
Jack's life. Around this time, Daniel realizes that the Secondary
Protocol has been activated by Widmore, and tells Charlotte that they
"have to get off the Island NOW!".
When Sayid arrives to take survivors back to the Kahana, Daniel informs
him that Jack has gone to follow the helicopter. Daniel agrees to start
ferrying people to the boat via the Zodiac raft while Sayid finds Jack.
He takes the first load (including Sun and Aaron) to the boat. He
returns to warn Charlotte and Miles that they have to get off the
island with the next group, but both of them opt to stay, though
Charlotte gives him a kiss on the cheek before he departs. Daniel and
the second load of survivors are caught midway between the Kahana and
the island when the former explodes and the latter is "moved" by
Benjamin Linus. The season 5 premiere episode reveals that the Zodiac
craft was close enough to the island to be taken with it.
Once back on the Island, Daniel meets up with the remaining survivors
and explains to them that the Island has begun skipping through time at
random intervals. He has Sawyer lead himself, Juliet, Charlotte and
Locke to the Hatch in order to establish the date by which man-made
landmarks are there. Once there, he steals away from the main group and
lures Desmond out of the hatch, telling him that the survivors are in
danger and that Desmond must remember to find Faraday's mother once he
is off the Island.
Daniel and the others are captured by a group of the others in the
1950's. One of the others looks at Daniel and says, "You just couldn't
stay away, could you?" Daniel, Charlotte, and Miles are taken to the
camp led by Richard Alpert. Once there, Daniel tells Richard that he is
the only person who can help them disarm a U.S. Nuclear bomb on the
island. He assures Richard that he is trust worthy because he loves
Charlotte. Faraday is led to the bomb, where he discovers it must be
buried because of a crack in the shell. Before he can bury the bomb,
the other girl is ambushed by Sawyer and Juliet and a time flash
occurs.
Following these events, Daniel remains with Charlotte when she
collapses. Amidst Charlotte's nonsense, she admits to Daniel that when
she was a girl, a "big scary man" came and told her to leave the
island. With fear, she realizes the man might have been Daniel himself.
Charlotte then dies in a Daniel's arms as he mourns. Daniel later
reveals to the others of Charlotte's death and whilst the group are
stuck in the 1970's they stay in the barracks with the DHARMA
Initiative and he sees a young girl with bright red hair who he
believes to be the younger Charlotte.
After the arrival of Jack, Kate, and Hurley in 1977, Sawyer is queried
by the survivors as to whether Faraday is with the DHARMA Initiative as
well. "Not anymore," says Sawyer.
Casting
Jeremy Davies was cast as Daniel because he is one of the
writer-producers' favorite character actors, and they think that his
"transformative quality [and] the tremendous intelligence that seems to
emanate from him … seemed perfect for the part." When Davies met
costume designer Roland Sanchez, he was wearing a thin black tie.
Sanchez merged this "cool, edgy look" with his idea for the character's
clothes: a "nerdy" loosely woven dress shirt from J.Crew.
