Lost Bernard Nadler Biography

Bernard Nadler  is a recurring fictional character on the ABC television series Lost played by Sam Anderson. According to the plot, Bernard is a survivor of the crash of the tail-section of Oceanic Flight 815 and is married to Rose Henderson.

Arc

Bernard is a dentist who meets Rose Henderson (L. Scott Caldwell) after fifty-six years of bachelorhood. He proposes five months later, where Rose reveals that she is sick and has only a year to live. The two marry regardless, and on their honeymoon in Australia, Bernard surprises her by taking her to a faith healer. Rose is upset, as she has already accepted her fate, but agrees to see the man. Afterwards she lies to Bernard that she has been cured. During the flight home, Bernard leaves to use the bathroom, but at this point the plane separates in midair, and the two ends crash at different points on an island.

Bernard lands with the tail-section survivors, still buckled to a seat, and stuck atop a tree. He is coaxed down by Ana Lucia (Michelle Rodriguez) and Goodwin (Brett Cullen). After the Island's previous inhabitants known as the "Others" invade the camp, Bernard finds himself as one of the few remaining survivors. They move inland, and discover a building known as the Arrow station, where they find an assortment of items, including a radio. Bernard uses it, and makes contact with Boone (Ian Somerhalder), one of the fuselage survivors. Ana Lucia switches the radio off, dismissing it as a trick by the Others. After three other fuselage survivors, Michael (Harold Perrineau), Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) and Sawyer (Josh Holloway) arrive, they reassure Bernard that Rose is alive and well. He sets off with them to migrate with the fuselage survivors. After Ana Lucia accidentally kills one of the fuselage survivors, Shannon (Maggie Grace), she refuses to allow anyone to go to the fuselage survivor's beach camp, but they eventually press on without her; Bernard is then reunited with Rose. Later, Bernard makes preparations to create a giant S.O.S. sign on the beach. After being discouraged by Rose, however, he takes his frustration out on the few people willing to help, until he is reduced to constructing it himself. Rose admits to lying about being healed on their honeymoon. Bernard abandons the sign when he learns that her illness disappeared on the island.

Much later, Bernard and Rose assist in rigging the shelters with wire from the wreckage. However, when Karl arrives on the beach to warn the camp of the Others' imminent arrival, Bernard volunteers to stay behind and detonate the dynamite, much to Rose's concern. That night, Bernard hits his target, killing a few Others in the ensuing explosion. When the plan backfires, however, Bernard retreats but is caught by Tom (M. C. Gainey). As he, Jin and Sayid (Naveen Andrews) are interrogated, Bernard reveals the location of the other survivors. He is soon rescued by Sawyer, Hurley and Juliet. When they all reunite at the cockpit crash site, Locke proposes to move into the barracks. Bernard offers his support to Rose if she wants to go with him, but the two end up staying with Jack and return to the beach. Bernard accompanies Jin on a fishing trip, where he states that he believes Jack was the right person to side with because Locke is a murderer. When the people who arrived from the freighter cannot use their phone they successfully use morse code to contact the boat, saying that the message is that their people are coming to save them all. But Bernard, who also knows morse code, reveals that they are lying about the message and that there is in fact no one coming to rescue the survivors. After arguing with them the next day, Bernard assists Juliet in Jack's appendicectomy, chloroforming him against his will when he and Juliet agreed that Jack was a danger to himself while conscious.

He remained on the Island during the final events of season 4, promising Rose he would stay on the island with her, even in the face of being rescued. He stayed with her during the shifts in time after Ben moves the island and was still on the beach until it came under attack by The Others circa 1954. He has not been seen since.

Development

In the initial plans for the series, Jack was going to die midway through the first episode, and then Kate would emerge as the leader of the survivors. Kate's backstory was that her husband went to the bathroom shortly before the plane split in mid-air, and on the Island she would remain adamant that he was alive. However the producers quickly changed their minds about Jack's death, making him the leader and creating a new backstory for Kate. They liked Kate's original backstory though, so they used it for Rose, and created Bernard as her husband.

L. Scott Caldwell's husband was going through health problems during the shooting of the first season, which was the inspiration for the flashbacks in "S.O.S.". Bernard and Rose do not feature in the third season until the penultimate episode "Greatest Hits". The writers cited Anderson and L. Scott Caldwell's other projects as a reason for their absence. Additionally, it was feared that fans would complain if they appeared, when many actors with star billing had received limited screentime in the early third season. The writers also do not want to have the couple on the show if they are just going to be standing in the background; they want to have Rose and Bernard in the show with interesting storylines.

Lost producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse joked that Rose and Bernard would later have their own spinoff show entitled "Rose & Bernard's Love Island", with Charlie as a pool boy, which would air for thirty-nine episodes after Lost finishes.
