McHale's Navy Plot

McHale's Navy is the adventures of the crazy crew of PT-73 during World War 2.  Their commander, Lt. Commander McHale was one of the smartest the Navy had to offer, but he liked to bend the rules and let his men have a good time. Their XO was Ensign Parker (Tim Conway).

They are joined by Fuji, who deserted the Japanese Navy, who wore a POW outfit just in case he got caught so he wouldn't be shot at. Captain Binghamton and Lt. Carpenter always tried to catch McHale at something, but he and the crew were just a little too smart for him.

They're initially stationed in the South Pacific, but move to Italy in the last season.

The show was popular enough to even have it's own comic book as you can see to your left.

Trivia Facts

The original 'pilot' for the World War Two sitcom McHale's Navy was a drama. It premiered on Fred Astaire's Premier Theater an anthology television show hosted by Astaire. This particular show aired "Seven Against The Sea" a World War II drama. It focused on a group of stranded American PT boat crewmen led by the Skipper McHale (Ernest Borgnine) .  It contained the basic elements of the show like McHale's crew living it up, but was serious for the most part. A year later McHale's Navy debuted as a 30 minute sitcom with added comedians Tim Conway and Joe Flynn.

The show ran from 1962 -1966 and inspired two movies "McHale's Navy and "McHale's Navy joins the Air Force" .  There was also a 1990's version with a appearance by Ernest Borgnine as Cobra.

The entire Pacific Ocean naval base was built on the back lot of Universal Studios. For many years after the show went off the air, the sets were used an attraction on the studio tour.

Captain Binghamton was nicknamed "Old Leadbottom".

Sometimes a character mentioned an unnamed commander of torpedo boat PT-109. PT-109 who was the boat commanded by then-President John F. Kennedy during World War Two.

Tim Conway went on to star in several movies. Most popular were with Don Knotts in the Apple Dumpling Gang. He made TV comedy history as part of the cast of the Carol Burnett Show.

Capt. Binghamton: Commander, how would you and your men like two weeks with nothing to do but play gin rummy, go surfing, have luaus with steel drum bands, dancing girls, hmm?
Lieut.Quinton McHale: Two whole weeks? Woo hooo, oh that'd be a wonderful change sir. Yes sir.
