The Life and Comedy Career of Bob Denver
Biography of an TV legend

The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis - Bob Denver as Maynard G. Krebs

When he first got his break on the 1959 Dobie Gillis TV show he was working two jobs, one as a  teacher and the other as a mailman. He got the job as Maynard G. Krebs, to his surprise, starring with Dwayne Hickman, who had the lead role as Dobie Gillis. Maynard was a beatnik, a early version of a hippie. He could barely pronounce the word work, literally. Maynard was definitely one of my personal all time favorite characters besides Gilligan.

Maynard's favorite lines were  "You rang?" and "Like, I'm getting all misty", and don't forget the already mentioned "Work!?". Like, Maynard was in to Jazz, man, and he, like, loved the bongos. Bob actually went to coffee houses to study beatniks for the role of Maynard. Like, it worked.

Dobie Gillis lasted 4 years, ending in 1963. It not only launched the career of Bob Denver, but it also got Warren Beatty off to a good start. He would later go on to star in movies like "Bonnie and Clyde" and "Dick Tracy".

In 1988 he revisited his role as Maynard G. Krebs on the TV reunion movie "Bring Me the Head of Dobie Gillis"

Denver and Dwayne Hickman had remained friends over the years since the classic show went off the air.

Remember Dobie's dad Herbert T. Gillis played by actor Frank Faylen? His other big role was that of Ernie Bishop on It's a Wonderful Life. Did you ever notice his pal's name on the movie was Officer Bert. Is that where Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie came from? Like, I'm wondering.

Like it's bongos, man!
