The Life and Comedy Career of Bob Denver
Bob Denver will always be remembered as Gilligan from Gilligan's Island. Bob went almost straight to work on Gilligan's Island in 1964, after the Dobie Gillis show had ended in 1963. The story of the ship wreck of the S.S. Minnow and the lost castaways who would forever be stranded on an Island, at least until the 1970's reunion. Gilligan's Island only lasted three years on it's initial run. It had good enough ratings to be renewed for another season, but one of the big wigs at CBS with prodding from his wife decided to axe Gilligan in order to make room for yet another season of Gunsmoke. Interestingly enough, Gunsmoke was the subject of one of Gilligan's parodies. In one episode where he dreamed he was the Marshall.
It might have seemed like the end of the road for our little buddy Gilligan, but it was only the beginning. Gilligan's Island would live on and on in reruns, gaining new fans with each repeat. Kids that weren't even alive during it's original run were loving the show, watching in the afternoons after school. 1974 would see Gilligan back on the island with the Skipper, Professor, Howells, Ginger, and Mary Ann, but this time it would be in cartoon form. |
