Bonanza is one of the most loved TV westerns
of all time. The series ran from September 12, 1959 - January
16, 1973, and though it got off to a rocky start, by 1961, it
was number 1 in the ratings. Bonanza was set in the 1860's in
Nevada Territory on the Cartwright's ranch, The Ponderosa. Ben
Cartwright was a three time widower and had a son by each of his
wives: Adam was the eldest, Hoss the middle son and Little Joe
was the youngest. Ben and his sons ran the Ponderosa while
always upholding fairness, lawfulness and high values.
Bonanza starred Lorne Greene as Ben
Cartwright, Pernell Roberts as Adam Cartwright (1959-1965), Dan
Blocker as Eric 'Hoss' Cartwright (1959-1972), and Michael
Landon as Joseph 'Little Joe' Cartwright. Michael Landon also
wrote and/or directed 21 of the 430 episodes.
