Gunsmoke ran for decades.  How come TVLand only shows a  fraction of the episodes?

I've read this somewhere else quite a while back but I assume it's still the case. The thing with shows like Gunsmoke is that they are broken up into packages and sold into syndication.
So TVland may only have the rights to show seasons 8-12 for example.

That's the reason when they used to show Dragnet they only showed the color episodes I'll bet.

Good answer.  Guess that could explain the moniker "Lost Episodes", too.

I always thought of Dragnet as being 2 separate series, Dragnet '67 being the one everybody else remembers.  We watch the B&W episodes on DVD and everytime Frank Smith busts a bottle over the perp's head, my detective husband says, "Can't do that any more".  Cracks me up.

Yeah, I've got some of the old black and white dragnet shows on dvd, but just a few. That's one series I like to own all the shows of.
