Nope.  You're #2.  I've been obsessed with this show ever since I can remember.

Is your Yahoo club members only?  If it is, I'm there!

That show rocks! I used to watch it in syndication every afternoon after school. It's the best western ever made in my opinion that and F-Troop which used to come on right before or after.

I was too young to have seen it when it was new, but every time the reruns are shown, it's different.  As a little kid it was an exciting shoot-em-up, as a teen it was more of a morality thing (or immorality thing - I lived for CC taking his shirt off!).  As an adult, with Encore Westerns now running it, I'm noticing depth to the characters that I never saw prior.

Tonight's episode reaffirmed my thoughts that CC was sorely under-rated as an actor.  I can understand his not wanting to be type cast like James Arness, but I wish he hadn't left the show.  I bet it could have run as long as Gunsmoke or Bonanza.

James Arness practically retired off of Gunsmoke it's one of the longest running shows in history. The Rifleman was a better show though. I wish I got that Encore Westerns channel. They were showing reruns a while back on the hallmark channel but they cut out half the show out for commercials.
I've been hoping for a season by season dvd sets, but I might have to settle with the Riflman Boxed Sets that are out. I think they do come with some extras anyway. Hey do you remember the Indian Marshall that used to appear every once in a while on the Riflman. He was a tough dude?

Another show I used to like to watch in reruns was Alias Smith and Jones. That was a pretty cool western.

Michael Ansara, hubby of Barbara Eden, as Sam Buckhart.  There was the spin-off, Law of the Plainsman.  Just as thought-provoking as Rifleman, but not nearly as popular.

You're right about James Arness making a career of Matt Dillon.  Still, CC was only on the Rifleman for 5 seasons, did at least 3 other TV series and a slew of so-so movies (and a couple of good ones).  But what is he remembered for?

Yup, Smith and Jones was a great one.  Encore Westerns is running that, too.  I thought Roger Smith was as good as Pete Duel.  Maybe the show just couldn't survive the stima of his suicide?

Another great one that no one remembers is Stagecoach West.  It only ran for a couple of seasons, but was very much like the Rifleman as far as intelligence quota.

I've been eyeballing a number of TV western boxed sets, but how does one find out before buying, whether or not the shows have been hacked up?  We've been disappointed too often buying "complete" versions of yodelin' cowboy movies that have had all the music edited out for TV.

Well you got to try and get the official dvd sets for the best chance of getting whole episodes. It's usually the sets that look unofficial and are cheaper that are taped off of tv. Some of these older shows are public domain so anyone can sell them. DVDS that mix up shows are probably public domain offerings like this one http://www.tvcrazy.net/B0000CDL6Q/Great_Western_TV_Shows_The_RiflemanBat_MastersonJim_BowieAnnie_OakleyKit_CarsonThe_DeputySug.html]click to see

The boxed sets of the Riflemen look like official jobs to me http://www.tvcrazy.net/B000FC2GG4/The_Rifleman_Boxed_Set_Collection_6.html One sign here of course is the hefty price tag.

This Riflman containing only a few episodes click herelooks like one that's a public domain offering and not likely to be as good quality.

There are exceptions to every rule though as some official boxed sets like Quantum Leap's first few seasons are missing the original music to save money on paying for the license for all the classic music they had on the show.

You know that guy that killed himself, I saw him on a John Wayne western a while back. He was playing Billy the Kid at least I'm pretty sure it was him, but I don't even remember the name of the movie.

Hmmm.  Can't help you there.  Aside from playing Hannibal Heyes, I only remember him as Gidget's brother-in-law.

Thanks for the insight on the DVD sets.  There's a complete Rifleman and a complete Gunsmoke we've been eyeballing.  They ain't cheap but they'd be worth it if  they're complete.

When you say complete you don't mean like complete episodes not like complete series do you? Because I was thinking if their were a complete set of Gunsmoke set it would be huge and would probably cost as much as a used car. I'd like to see how big that one would be. Of course one of these days they'll fit 20 seasons into one DVD somewhow I'll bet. Is any of the sets you are looking at on this page? http://www.tvcrazy.net/videos/westerns/gunsmoke.htm

I had been looking at the 50th anniversary edition.  Now that you made me look a little harder, it's "selected" episodes.  The "complete" sets only have about 6 episodes per $50.00 disc.  I keep forgetting that the seasons were longer in them thar days - it would cost about $300.00 per season, times 20 seasons...  That's about what I paid for my new Golf in 1986.

The Actor that played "Billy the Kid - Bonnie" in the 1970 John Wayne movie Chisum was in fact Geoffrey Duel, the twin Brother of Pete Duel who played the part of Hannibal Hayes / Joshua Smith in the T.V. Western Series - Alias Smith and Jones. [1971 - 1973 ], the Series itself being based upon the 1969 Western movie: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, starring the late Paul Newman and Robert Redford.

After the untimely death of Pete Duel from playing around with a loaded Gun while at home watching an episode of the Series Smith and Jones over the evening from 30th/31st December 1971, Pete Duel died from his injury caused by this accident, and with 2 Seasons of the Smith and Jones Series already recorded, the  ABC Studios asked Geoffrey Duel to step into his late twin brother's shoes to play the vacant role of Smith, but Geoffrey declined the offer and this part was taken up for the last Series for the 1973 Season by: Roger Davis, who himself was the only person previously ever to be shot and killed in an earlier episode of the Series when playing a "Baddie" part by: Ben Murphy when as playing the part of "Kid" Curry / Thaddeas Jones.

Thanks for the trivia. I can understand why his brother didn't take the role for Alias Smith and Jones, but it's also a shame too. Would have been  good for the show if he had.
