Jericho focuses on a small town that becomes the only one left in what appears to be a nuclear war. The first episode was pretty good even though the premise seems like something that would make a better mini series or movie than a full fledged TV series. I think it's a very brave effort and I hope it succeeds.

Shows about small towns are few and far between anymore, it's interesting that sci-fi is the only place you see a small town. Other small town sci-fi shows include Smallville and Eureka where the town sheriff was even referred to as Mayberry on one episode. Sometimes, I wonder if Hollywood thinks they are too sophisticated to lower themselves to the standards of small town America. To me the most interesting shows and movies deal with average people living in rural America. They are almost the forgotten people in the entertainment world anymore. Most shows are in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, etc.

So when I see a show with small town citizens, I have to take notice. It is so much more entertaining when you can identify even remotely to the characters of a story.

Gerald McRaney stars as the town mayor in Jericho. You might remember him from Simon and Simon back in the 80's. He has troubles dealing with his son who apparently has a checkered past, but now seems to be maturing despite what the Mayor thinks.

I hope the series keeps one foot in small town American values and the other way into sci-fi. Keep us guessing like Lost, but I really hope they don't keep dangling the same questions over our heads for ever. I hate that.
