"Taxi" was the predecessor of "Cheers", from James Brooks, Stan Daniels, and David Davis, and I really loved this show, too. What an amazing cast of some of the most talented actors and comedians ever assembled for one series, from Judd Hirsch and Danny DeVito, to Andy Kaufman, Carol Kane, and Christopher Lloyd...and future TV superstar, Tony Danza, too! At times sublimely silly, at times, bittersweet, but never dull...

Police Woman

"Police Woman" (1974-1978)...It's a sad fact of life for most 'movie star' actresses that once they hit 40, roles dry up, and the phone stops ringing...and television, which wasn't even considered an option when they were 'on top', suddenly becomes an attractive alternative to unemployment! Angie Dickinson, a capable if not dazzling star (better known for her affairs with Sinatra and JFK than her acting), found, at 43, that this cop show not only provided a steady paycheck, but respect as an actress that not even making "Rio Bravo" with Howard Hawks and John Wayne had provided.

While plots were often silly (it was a stretch to imagine her undercover as a go-go dancer or magazine model), the series did tackle (in TV terms) spousal abuse, cancer, sex discrimination, and other issues. It was no dramatic threat to "Hill Street Blues" or "Cagney & Lacey", but it was certainly deeper than, say, "Charlie's Angels"...

Not a bad legacy for an actress considered 'washed up'!

"Hart to Hart" (1979-1984)...Creator Sidney Sheldon and producer Aaron Spelling hoped to capture the sophistication that William Powell and Myrna Loy brought to the old "Thin Man" movies, updated with Robert Wagner and Stephanie Powers (with a lovable 'Asta'-type pooch named 'Freeway', and comic relief from movie legend Lionel Stander). They didn't succeed (actually, "Moonlighting" came closest to capturing the wit and style of the "Thin Man"), but Wagner and Powers were so likable, Spelling had another hit, anyway!

There was a running gag about "Hart to Hart" (that applied equally well to "Murder, She Wrote")...how many friends could they have left, since one of them seemed to get murdered every week! (If I were a friend, I'd NEVER invite them over!)

Hunter

If "McCloud" was a TV variation of Clint Eastwood's "Coogan's Bluff", "Hunter" (1984-1991) was certainly inspired by Eastwood's "Dirty Harry" films...ex-Pro Football star Fred Dryer played Police Sgt. Rick Hunter, a guy who lived by his own code, didn't believe in 'warning shots', and (initially) had underworld family ties; he was partnered with Sgt. Dee Dee McCall (the VERY hot Stepfanie Kramer), who proved to be his equal in law enforcement skills (and with better people skills).

After nearly being cancelled in it's first season (nobody could air opposite "Dallas" in it's prime), the show was moved, and became a hit, for several seasons...unfortunately, however, all shows have a limited 'shelf life'; Kramer eventually left the series, Hunter was 'sanitized', and the series became preachy and dull...

But in it's prime, it was action-packed and quite funny, and had a lot of fans!

"Quincy" (1976-1983), the 'daddy' of all the forensic mystery TV shows airing now, from "C.S.I." to "Bones"...The show was very entertaining, the first few seasons, with star Jack Klugman's coroner a perfect blend of wisdom and humor (and Quincy lived in a houseboat, which I think was WAY cool!). Robert Ito, as his assistant, Sam, was likable, and it was fun watching the wily Quincy out-smart the police in murder investigations.

Robert Blake and coolest bird on TV, Fred the Cockatoo, in "Baretta"...it's a shame that Blake's subsequent actions 'buried' this '70s cop show, as it was really quite entertaining...although the theme song (sung by Sammy Davis, Jr.) seems more than a little ironic ("Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time, Yeah, don't do it."). A bit of trivia...Blake nearly got James Garner's role in "The Rockford Files", but the producers decided he was too short as Jim Rockford!
