| Description: |
"Police Woman" (1974-1978)...It's a sad fact of life for most 'movie star' actresses that once they hit 40, roles dry up, and the phone stops ringing...and television, which wasn't even considered an option when they were 'on top', suddenly becomes an attractive alternative to unemployment! Angie Dickinson, a capable if not dazzling star (better known for her affairs with Sinatra and JFK than her acting), found, at 43, that this cop show not only provided a steady paycheck, but respect as an actress that not even making "Rio Bravo" with Howard Hawks and John Wayne had provided.
While plots were often silly (it was a stretch to imagine her undercover as a go-go dancer or magazine model), the series did tackle (in TV terms) spousal abuse, cancer, sex discrimination, and other issues. It was no dramatic threat to "Hill Street Blues" or "Cagney & Lacey", but it was certainly deeper than, say, "Charlie's Angels"...
Not a bad legacy for an actress considered 'washed up'! |
