Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

In association with Amazon.com

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Silly monsters again
This game suffers from the same problem as Uncharted 1 and Far Cry 1. The game is good fun, the graphics are good and play is generally an immersive experience until the developers run out of ideas midway with the silly monster figures. Surely they could come up with better crap than that. It's farcical to play an adventure game in a quasi real life mode and then have to face idiotic characters/monsters. It cheapens the game and is a big turn off. It would have been better to just have human mercenaries instead.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Amazing !!
I am going to keep this short and to the point. This game is amazing, think of it as a young indiana jones going around the world and kicking butt. This is definitely the best game of 2009 without question.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Great graphics, canned gameplay
First the good: The art was phenomenal. The locations felt authentic. Some of the puzzles were entertaining. The "stunts" were quite well done and had a good sense of physicality.

The bad: Plot-line and game-play were very canned. I almost felt as if I were on rails(disclaimer: the train sequence was my favorite part). I'm used to more freedom in a game these days and being able to do things as I want to, as well as exploring. For a game about explorers and adventurers, I felt as if everything I did was predetermined. The only time this let up was in combat. Otherwise the whole game was "action button here, step here, jump here, oops! you just barely made it!"

The best game-play were the combat elements and there are better combat games out there.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - "Why do I always get myself into these things?"
Uncharted 2 really is a marvel - not only does it improve upon the original game in nearly every way, it establishes its own identity right from the start, and holds it throughout the adventure.

By now, everyone knows about the positives of the experience. First off, the graphics are amazing. Every area is distinct and has its own sense of history, and once you get up to the higher buildings and plateaus, you'll be wowed by the draw distance (you can look way out towards mountains and far off buildings, and everything out there is rendered, not just some flat surface). The temples in particular are just gorgeous, with multiple light sources and highly detailed statues and idols. As with the first game, water looks fantastic, whether in pools or rapids, and fire is just as convincing. Nate and his companions look great and are animated with more fluidity this time around, and there seem to be more enemy types than in the first game (you can tell which ones are tougher just by looking at their armor and/or face paint).

The first game got a little monotonous towards the end, as the last few chapters fell back on long gunfights against waves of bad guys. Uncharted 2 has a lot more variety in terms of gameplay, including some of the most memorable sequences of this gaming generation. In one of my favorites, you start off on the back of a train and have to run/climb to the front, all while battling enemies and trying to avoid fire from a helicopter (and you'll notice that the environment actually changes around you - no repetitive backgrounds here!). Even the seemingly mundane tasks are fun, as the platforming isn't as tedious and puzzles aren't as obvious (though they're are still spelled out for you in the journal). Gunfights are always entertaining and require some strategy (enemies will flank you and throw grenades/launch rockets/snipe you from afar). There is a greater variety of weapons, and combined with the possibility of stealth kills, it allows for multiple strategies.

I haven't mentioned the story yet, but it's very good as well. I didn't really dig Nate's new friends (it's pretty obvious they're setting him up), but thankfully you meet up with an old one before too long. Nate and his friends spout tons of fun dialogue and lighten the air in otherwise tense situations. The plot is much like an Indiana Jones movie, with a brutal commander seeking out a mystical orb, and several parts were definitely inspired by the Tomb Raider and Metal Gear Solid games. There is a surprise revelation at the end again, and it fits what was set up pretty well. It's also followed up by an end boss fight that's actually worthy of the rest of the game, and exciting in its own right. I did feel that the fate of one person at the end could have taken a different path, as things are wrapped up a little too neatly.

Now for the negatives. First off, the controls can be a pain, even towards the end of the game. Don't get me wrong, they're much improved from the first game (where I always had issues moving the camera, especially when transitioning from platforming to aiming). For one thing, grenades no longer require an arc, you just aim as with your gun and press L2 to toss one to that spot. But there are issues...

As with the first Uncharted, I found the cover system annoying at times, as I'd keep jumping out of cover when really I wanted to run behind the next box or pillar. I also found myself getting "unstuck" from cover when I didn't want to be (Nate will often stand up from cover when walking behind a fence or wall). It doesn't help that the same button is used for rolling. If they had used the same system as in MGS4 (where you would remain in cover until you pressed circle again) it would have been more clear which position you were in. Platforming is more intuitive than the first game, but it's not always clear which pieces of the background can be climbed or jumped onto and which can't. Also, it's a minor thing, but over the course of the game, you'll repeat the same actions a few times, like rappelling down a line to a lower area, having to give someone a boost to reach a ladder, or pushing a cart out of the way.

A few times in the game, I got stuck in a room or other area and didn't know what to do next. For instance, at one point you're on the roof of a tall building and there is no obvious way to get down. You're supposed to follow one of your companions to show you the way, but if you're not fast enough, she will be gone and you'll be left running around for half an hour, wondering how she disappeared. As I mentioned above, I would try jumping onto certain things and wouldn't be able to. Most of the time the game gives hints on how to proceed, but this isn't always the case.

Occasionally there will be a graphical hiccup, as a texture would pop in after a second or two or Nate would clip through an object or the floor. These are small things and easily overlooked in light of the otherwise fantastic visuals. My PS3 Slim locked up towards the end of the game, but played the rest just fine (I think it was right before a cutscene). That was the only major problem in almost 13 hours of play.

One other thing that's worth mentioning: There are no female enemies in the game. The only (two) women in the game are Nate's friends. One is the dark, mysterious type, the other a plucky "sunshine" girl. You play alongside the women at times, but never get to play AS them (which would have been a nice change of pace). I guess having them fight with you is enough for now though, as the AI is well done and they will take out some of the enemies for you.

By the way, Sully is only in a small portion of the game, which is disappointing.

These few problems do little to mar the overall experience. Uncharted 2 is lots of fun to play and has plenty of memorable moments, and remains one of the best games on the PS3.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One of the best game of all time.
This is the most awesomest game ever created but why do they keep having those puzzle solving parts of the game. I can't stand puzzle solving. I had to cheat on the puzzle solving aspect of the game or I would of never finished the game.
