Batman: Arkham Asylum Video Games

In association with Amazon.com

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Game
I have been waiting for a batman game as good as this. No other game that features the Caped Crusader comes close. You are the Dark Knight and you have his useful gadgets. The replay value on this is pretty good. the thugs react differently when they see you and they react to their enviroment if they notice someone is missing. I hope they make a part 2 or a sequel to the game.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Fun being the bat, puzzle and Croc levels painful
So, I like Batman. Especially the dark night. I like kicking the snot of bad guys. The trouble is that some of the Sandman levels timing are vexingly close, and the Killer Croc level was infuriatingly difficult, especially escaping again. The lack of a map make it hard to get out especially after Croc starts destroying the floating platforms. I got stuck on this level and could not move forward.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Amusing, fun game
This game is a nice way to pass spare time. I played it through during breaks in my office, stealing 10 minutes here and there. It probably does not sustain prolonged play, as much of the game consists of moving from room to room, wiping out various bad people, and doing it over again, but it's good for a break.
Story mode in the game is kind of dull: though the player has sundry tasks to complete, the actual game play for each of the tasks is more or less the same, with the exception of six episodes (these all having the same game-play style) that require using a different set of key-and-mouse combinations.
The graphics are fairly good. I'm not sure about the sound, as I played it pretty much turned way down.
Most impressive to me about the game was how well behaved it was on my computer. Though I left it running in the background for about two weeks, I experienced no glitches whatsoever and could just tab in and out at any time. The light footprint is appreciated.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Loved It
This is a game with nothing lacking. The graphics are impressive. My favorite part is the free flow combat. I still enjoy playing it today even though I bought a month ago, but you could complete story mode rather quickly making it a possible rental.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Over-hyped game that doesn't like XP and ATI
Batman Arkham Asylum is possibly the best comic book based game ever made. That said it is also one of the most over hyped games in recent memory. The game does a great job of creating the world of the Batman, Arkham looks great, Joker, Harley and the rest of the rogues gallery that appear are all done very well. The storyline is awesome as is the voice acting.

The problems that I have with the game relate mainly to the game play. I found the game play a bit boring after a while, this is likely due to the fact that BAA is clearly a game that was developed for a console system and then ported to PC. The game is very short, to lengthen the time it takes you to complete it, there are a massive number of collectibles for you to find during the game, or after you have completed it, when you can explore the post game island.

There were times when I really felt like I was playing Tomb Raider. There are a few areas where the challenge is really just to figure out how to climb, jump, glide, ect... from the bottom of an area to the top. Batman even hangs and shimmies like Lara. The thing is, I'm not really a fan of Tomb Raider and didn't really enjoy these parts.

The boss fights are pretty terrible, Scarecrow and Killer Croc standing out as the worst. Scarecrow appears 3 times, each time you end up "fighting" him in a camera locked, side scrolling, hide and seek mini game. The first time was ok, but the next two I found annoying. Not challenging, or difficult, just boring and annoying. The Croc "Fight" also boring, annoying and drawn out. Ivy's fight is just a usual console boss fight, takes 0 strategy or effort. I found it unnecessarily long, especially as you have to do the same exact thing 3 times. I would have like to see a bit more creativity in the boss fights, they were a huge let down for me.

Also there seem to be a number of problems plaguing people who run this game on XP or with ATI cards. You can check the PC specific sub forum on the BAA official forums for more details. It seems to run well on Vista and Windows 7. The DRM and Windows live requirements have been talked about by others so I'll leave that alone, as I really don't understand what Windows Live's purpose is. I will note that I was unable to download the 1.1 patch from W.L.; instead I had to download it from a third party hosting site.

I will point out the lack of support for non 360 controllers, as in a PC game this is a glaring oversight.

Summary: Great job on Batman's world. Fun game, but no replay value. A bit short and overly restrictive game play for my tastes, pick it up when the price drops.
