Second only to the third version of Snake-Eyes and the only version of Scoop, Spirit (before the tacked-on "Iron-Knife" moniker) was my favorite G.I. Joe action figure as a kid.
Recreated here for Hasbro's 25th Anniversary toyline, Spirit has been completely remodeled and updated and includes new versions of all his original weapons and accessories, including his pet eagle "Freedom", plus a few new items.
First off, I was pleasantly surprised to see this figure get an update in the 25th anniversary line, simply because he wasn't the most popular character back in the 80's and as I recall, didn't even appear in the cartoon series.
He was simply known as "Spirit" in those days, before getting a name change sometime in the 90's with the addition of "Iron-Knife." I guess Spirit just wasn't tough enough sounding, but if that's the logic then how do you explain "Chuckles" or a guy named "Barbecue" who doesn't start fires but puts them out?
Anyway, the idea of remaking Spirit was great, however I do have a few issues with the updated version.
First off, the original's loin cloth was removable. The poorly sculpted new one is not. Second, if you're going to name a guy Iron-Knife, you better give him a big fat fighting knife. This new version comes with a cheap little knife with a light brown blade, not even silver, and the big knife on his chest is not only poorly sculpted but not removable.
Third, in an effort to make Spirit's braided pony tails more manly I guess, they sculpted one to the back and one forward of his head. Bad move in my opinion as the original Spirit has his drapped to both sides.
Might be just me, but I'm a little offended that Hasbro didn't take as much care in crafting the 25th Anniversary Spirit.
I guess the Native Americans are slighted even in the action figure world.
