I am so happy to have received my tricorders (4 science and 2 medical)! They do way more than I thought they would for the cheap price, and the extra hand-held devices are a very cool extra! Also, the adjustability of the shoulder straps is a great detail. As far as quality, I did not go into this blind...I've had to return defective phasers and communicators for perfect ones. I expected to have to do the same with at least 2 of these tricorders, but there's a fixable issue on one only...the rest are great! The detail on these pieces is awesome...yeah, you have to be careful of the silver paint, but a little touch up once in a while won't kill me if I feel like being that anal. I think I will see about making real leather straps, but the vinyl ones are okay and the packing kinks iron out easily enough...be sure to use a pressing cloth so you you don't melt the vinyl! After all these years, I now am finally (and gratefully) ready to fully outfit a landing party of 6!! Energize...hailing frequencies closed.

I reluctantly purchased this after having read other reviews. I was more than pleasantly surprised when it arrived and I discovered that it was not a piece of junk. The example I received is of equal quality to the other products in this line. The paint and "chrome" parts are just fine. The screen doesn't look like the one pictured above, but it looks good enough for a product at this price. I'm perfectly happy with this purchase.

I will soon be returning this product for the following reasons:
1. Unlike the photo, which makes it look like the tricorder has a "video" screen (which I knew it wouldn't, of course), it is a pre-printed piece of plastic. I would almost have preferred a blank screen.
2. Two of the three LEDs are blue. Blue LEDs didn't exist in the TOS era. They should have been red, yellow, and green.
3. The sound effects are very tinny - you can tell there is a very small speaker or piezzo buzzer
4. The bottom door handle - necessary to take the tricorder from demo to play mode, is broken.
5. The plastic looks and feels extremely cheap
6. The deployable (medical) scanner is nothing like the tv show prop. The TV show prop features a moving light at the end. Instead, this toy features basically a smooth silver plastic cylinder with a color-changing LED at one end.
7. It is way overpriced. I may have been willing to pay around [..] for this level of quality.
So basically, it's cheaply made for the price and is not what I would consider an "authentic" toy model of a TOS tricorder. It would be great for the casual fan or as a child's toy, but not for the picky (or the obsessive) fan.

All these questions can now be answered with this great new product.I wont bore you with a review about its lights and sounds and paint jobs.All the bells and whistles work on mine and Iam very happy.Ilove this thing for one reason.Its a toy powered by your thoughts and you make it do whatever you pretend it can do.The only limit to this toy is in your own mind.So what are you waiting for??? Buy this toy,jump in your U.S.S. chevy and go scan things in the park. Excercise your mind.Thats the true joy of this product.

Although the silver parts were painted and not metal. This is a great prop for the money the sound effects and working minore were great I bought the master replicas prop and love it also. But when you look at going out for halloween or sci fi events and dressing up. Taking the expensive tricorder was kinda scary so this diamond select prop for the money is great not only dose it look and sound like the prop if something happens to it. Heaven forbid then you have not invested alot of money in it so for the toy itself I give it a great review.
And if you missed out on the master replicas tricorder although the diamond select one is not as nice it is worth the money. Oh yes even though the light up scanner (Where is that used in the original series?)
it is nice and fun to play with.
