This device (and the communicator and phaser) from the original Star Trek series is a faithful reproduction of Spock's Tricorder (does anyone know that the three things are that a TRI-corder records?). It is a toy but it is good enough quality to be a collectible. Lots of bells and whistles, and includes a popout compartment for the little hand held scanner. "Callback" mode is fun and display is hilariously old fashioned (not to mention the moving moire pattern on the front). Totally happy with the purchase. Recommend buying the communicator and phasor, they are also very well made and thought out. Even my 12 year old son thinks they are cool. For gadgets likt this under $40 you can't beat them. Perfect for Original Series Trekkies.

Back in the 1990s, certain attempts were made at making toys from Star Trek TOS. They were ok. I got them, but they always seemed to lack a bit in the credible department. Then the new movie came out this year, and I came across the communicator and phaser from Diamond Select Toys. Not only were they replicas, it was like I had just went through the backstage of filming and got the actual props of the TV Show! My kids are into Star Trek, and since I turned out ok... I have passed on these wonderful toys to them. There is nothing like the power of imagination! It inspires the soul and adds a level of excitement to life that video games just can't match! The tricorder was our latest toy, and oh boy oh boy is this one simply amazing!

I bought this Tricoder because I am a huge fan of the original series, but was disappointed when I took it out of the packaging. For $40 I expected a little more, not some crappy little toy not much bigger than a communicator. There are a lot of painting errors as others have pointed out. I tinkered with it for five minutes, but easily got bored. Of course, I probably would have found much amusement with it 15 years ago when I was 5, but as an adult, there is just so little you can do with this toy. If I were roleplaying Star Trek with friends, I think this would come very handy, but I don't think many of my friends would think highly of me if I came up to them and said, "Hey, let's pretend we're on the U.S.S Enterprise, I'll be Spock!" Oh, and by the way, it doesn't specify anywhere on this page but this is a Science Tricorder, but they do make the Medical one's as well.
All in all, it's not a bad toy, not at all. I would definitely recommend this toy to any trekkie, because it is a wonderful piece to have in your collection, and for $40 it sure beats the $1000 replica (which I will obtain, one of these days!)

I ordered this and at first I thought it was broken because all it would do was play one of the stock phrases "Most strange. Readings indicate a life form--possibly human." when any of the three buttons was pressed and flipping the top panel open/closed had no effect.
However, after reading another post on amazon, I looked at the battery compartment, and there is a switch with three settings--"Try me", "Off", and "Play". It was set to "Try me" (the in store demo setting). When I switched it to "Play" it behaved as expected and as described in the instruction sheet. The instructions don't mention these three settings at all! All they have is a picture of the battery compartment with the labels "Try me" and "Play"--but they fail to describe the switch and what any of the settings do! Bad instructions!
Anyway, once I switched it to the right mode, it is pretty fun. Definately a good toy or prop for those who are classic star trek fans. I plan to use it this halloween a lot with my Spock costume. I think it's a bit overpriced, but am more than satisfied with the features, even if the craftsmanship is only fair.
SWITCH IT TO PLAY!
