Stunning, looks great! The only complaint is that because they redid the original effects (which for the most part I hate and don't watch) they decided that they sound not do ANYTHING to the original effects. So you go from a stunning picture with the actors to the effects shots which are full of scratches, dirt and dust very evident on the film. At least they could have cleaned that part up. Why not go all the way? In any event I still would rather see those then the remastered effects. Just a little grip but for the price you cant beat this set. I paid [...] bucks for a two episode DVD when they were first released so this is a real bargain AND in high def.

Star trek has been written about probably more than any show. From its countless pop culture references, to it examination of political and social commentaries, Star Trek has been talked about ad nauseam. Given the vast amount of writings, in some ways, its almost arrogant to try and add something new. However, if you're reading this, you're probably not as interested in a review of the series and episodes as much as you're interested in whether the Blu Ray is worth getting. I will say this new Blu-ray is something rather special. The picture is amazing, and I feel almost like I'm watching the show again for the first time, kind of like when you've heard a joke a hundred times, but then one day you hear it a little different and you laugh, like its new but familiar as well.
However, the trouble is that the Blu ray is almost too good. I can tell when the make up meshes with real skint. I can tell when a punch misses the target. In fact, the Blu Ray is so clear that you can actually see and clearly identify the stunt doubles as they are intermixed with the close up of kirk or whoever is fighting. So your interest in the Blu ray may vary. While the show's strengths in story and acting are highlighted, the weaknesses of the technology are made the more apparent. That being said, I love having the ability to watch both the new and old effects addition, as well as the slew of special features included makes this a must have for me.

One of the coolest new features on this box set is called Mobile-Blu. This application allows you to use your iPhone or iPod Touch as a remote control for the movie. Another cool feature of Mobile-Blu is the tab called Content To Go. This allows you to transfer the special features video and exclusive interview video directly to your iPhone or iPod Touch. The special features video is then stored on your phone for you to watch whenever you want without needing the Blu-ray discs. I didn't have time to watch all of the special features over the weekend, so I transferred them to my iPhone to watch on the way to work.
So, on top of the quality of this box set I feel that Mobile-Blu really adds a few very cool new features never seen before in Blu-ray. I can't wait to see where they take this Mobile-Blu thing to next.

I have been a Star Trek fan since it first premiered back in the sixties. I taped all the episodes when Sci Fi ran them uncut. Thanks to DVD, and now Blu-Ray, however, you can own a great quality version of your favorite shows. This blu-ray set is fantastic. I am a purist...I don't like the idea that they messed with the classic shows and redid all the special effects. However, I am watching them that way out of curiosity. But the best part of this set is, the originals are still on here, in the same high quality blu-ray can offer. The interface is easy, the picture quality is supurb. I used to watch this in reruns in such bad quality prints, this is refreshing to see them like this. The audio is better than can be expected...truly a great effort in dealing with a classic. Highly recommended for the traditional Trek fan. Even if you don't like the revamped effects, the old ones are still here. Here is looking forward to season two, which I already have on pre-order.

I am writing for two reasons. One, to state that Season 2 is a close second behind Season 1 in overall quality. Season 2 has some classics like "Amok Time", with the debut of the "Lonely Bass Line" musical theme, "Wolf in the Fold"( Scotty's favorite), "Mirror Mirror", "I Mudd"," ...Tribbles", "Bread and Circuses"(our current state of civilization), A Piece of the Action, and Patterns of Force. But it did contain a few stinkers, notably the unwatchable Catspaw and the annoying Friday's Child. Overall, the quality is quite good.
Secondly, I write in defense of William Shatner's staccato acting. If you really watch all the episodes closely you'll notice most of the time Kirk is fairly even with his emotions and acting. It's when he's going off on a rant about, "without creativity the body dies", or having to out-reason a computer(M-5, Return of the Archons, The Changeling) or speech in front of huge brains encased in glass. Often he rise to the occasion with an impassioned plea during a trail scene. Usually we he is just talking with Spock or Bones, it's very thoughtful, measured, and relaxed. It's during the times when he has to convince someone or something that his acting becomes hyperbolic.. But, this makes sense from the character's perspective as he needs to act this way in order to persuade other characters that his way is the right way..
The other way Shatner's acting seems seems "over the top" are episodes involving "change of character". For example, in "The Enemy ("I wanna live") Within", he had to play the ID character in an over the top manner. Similar episodes where he had to "be" someone else include Season 1's "The Naked Time" , where he grabs his infected hands and utters, "Now I know why the call it SHE!", and "Shore Leave", where he's interacting with a childhood rival. In Season 2, there's "Mirror Mirror" (evil Kirk), "The Deadly Years"( aging Kirk), "I Mudd"( fun loving Kirk), and "Return to Yesterday"( where Sargon inhabits his body). Season 3 had "The Paradise Syndrome"( where Kirk becomes an Indian,"I am Kirok"), "The Enterprise Incident"( Kirk as Romulan) and "Turnabout Intruder"( perhaps the "most overacted" Kirk, but he's actually playing a woman).
In all these instances of grand speeches, or when Kirk became someone else, or was impersonating someone else, Shatner was doing what was required of that character at that moment. It wouldn't make sense to play it any other way. I also submit to you when people look back on their "remembered" Star Trek episodes, it will most likely be these occasions that "stand out". When they reflect, they'll think, "boy that Shatner sure did overact". But upon further reflection they should reason, "You know what, it wasn't overacting, but necessary to the character." Keep in mind Shatner was a Shakespeare trained actor, like Olivier. Are we to accuse all Shakespearean actors of over acting?
I should also point out that much of the Shatner overacting accusations derive from his roles post-Trek, especially TJ Hooker, which is difficult viewing. And his role on Boston Legal, where he's seems to play an over the top buffoon. But his performances are amazing as Denny Crane. These and his appearances on SNL and the TV adds enhance this caricature.
Finally I'd like to debunk the "Myth" that Shatner got some "action" in every Star Trek episode. He is definitely flirtatious and charming with the fairer sex. But on only two confirmed occasions did he actually "close the deal". That's barely 3% of the time. What's all the fuss?? The following is a run down of all alleged "transgressions". I've categorized them into 4 areas.
Flirting or Is Feeling Randy
Mudd's Women
The Enemy Within
The Naked Time
Catspaw
A Private Little War
Plato's Stepchildren( A forced interracial kiss)
Elaan of Troyius
Maybe
The Conscience of the King
The City on the Edge of Forever
The Gamesters of Triskelion
*Lt. Marlena Moreau (both of them!) from "Mirror Mirror"
Probably
Shore Leave
The Mark of Gideon
Definitely
The Paradise Syndrome(he actually gets the gal pregnant)
Wink of a Eye( he is seen sitting on a bed and putting on his boots)
*Drusilla in "Bread and Circuses"
*I've added the following as Stephen has noticed a few missed a couple of Kirk's dalliances.
Kirk in NOT the Oversexed Captain of urban legend. But a DAMN good actor!
