Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Awesome
I've been wanting to buy PS3 for a long time, i guess i was holding back because of the High def. format war to end. As soon as HD-DVD was out, i evaluated WII and PS3 and went ahead and bought this version to try it out. Its been great, no issues so far. I bought Call of Duty and a couple of BDs and the experience has just been awesome.

I also bought a Sony HD handycam SR-11 and it integrates with PS3 really well.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Truth about the Console Wars
Last Fall when I could not afford a PS3 for me and my son, we purchased a XBOX360. We bought it because you could start small (Arcade version) and slowly add-on to your system. After a while though, we kept looking at the PS3 and its growing library of T rated games. When GameStop had their buy 2 get one free sale, we traded the 360 and accessories and got 8 games and a controller for the PS3. And a couple weeks later got the system for our birthdays (we were both born in the same month). What we learned about the two systems may help those of you trying to make a choice for your family.

Exclusive Games - PS3 wins for Teens and families, 360 wins for M-rated games
While we really enjoyed the 360, we constatly found ourselves looking at the T rated games on the PS3. Uncharted, Lair, Warhawk, Motorstorm, and Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction are all exclusive to the PS3. Most of the games we really enjoyed on the 360 (Call of Duty 4, Frontlines, Star Wars Lego) are also available on the PS3. If you look at the exclusives, PS3 has the best selection of games that are not adult-only fare. The best 360 exclusives are: Gears of War (M), Bioshock (M), and Halo (M). There are others for both systems, but these are the ones that get the most attention.

Final note on exclusives: The PS3 is going to be going head to head with the 360 on these M rated exclusives also with the release of Killzone 2, inFamous and Resistance 2 within the next year.

The Power of the System Hardware - PS3 dominates
Having played both, I can truly say that the graphics on the PS3 are superior. I don't know the processor speeds and all that, I just know that I have played Call of Duty 4 (1080p) on both systems and the PS3 is better.

Also, the fact that everyone knows is the presence of the Blu-Ray disk player. This thing is awesome to watch movies on. The disks are too expensive right now, but will probably come down as they replace traditional DVDs. The HD DVD format (the one the 360 supported through additional hardware) is all but dead.

The size of the Hard Drive - PS3 wins.
40 GB vs. 20 GB. But honestly, 40 GB is not going to be sufficient for long. More and more games are eating up HD space just for offline play.

Online Capability - PS3 wins.
This is the one that I really feared when we switched. I didn't like the idea of getting something free! Can you believe that? But in the past, I have found that you usually get what you pay for. My favorite all time game is Call of Duty 4 and that is because of its online prowess. I held my breath when I went to play it online. Surprise! It was nearly an identical experience. Playing online was easier to get set-up than the 360, it didn't require payment or a Microsoft supported email account. Also, Warhawk is an awesome online game exclusive to the PS3. You make the choice - pay 50 a year for one or pay nothing - not a tough choice for a family on a strict budget.

Backward Compatibility - 360 dominates (after the price decrease of the PS3)
You can play most old xbox games on the 360. But on the 40 GB version of the PS3, you have zero compatability. This really stinks. I truly believe that if Sony offered an add-on to play the old games on the new system that you could buy separately later on, their sales would have dominated. If you got one of the 80 GB models, it plays many PS2 games, but the only PS3s to play all PS2 games through Hardware (it actually contains a PS2 chip in the console) are the discontinued 20GB and 60GB consoles. If you can find one of those cheap, then the PS3 at least ties with the 360.

Aesthetics - Tie
If the controller that comes with the PS3 was not so flimsy, the PS3 would win this category. The Dualshock Sixaxis controller has just come out, so maybe it has a better feel. But the original ones feel like they will break easily. The 360 really does have a cool design. The PS3 is more traditional. But the on screen graphics on the PS3 are more clear and intuitive.

Conclusion
Making the decision to buy one of these systems over the other is not easy. Few people have the money and time for both. Here is my recommendation:

If you are a young male 16-30 years old looking for the most intense mature games out there, buy a 360.

If you have a family, but still want access to intense gameplay, buy a PS3.

If you just want something for your family to clown around with and enjoy on game night, buy a Wii.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Amazing
The PS3 is certainly the hallmark of next-gen consoles. I got the PSone when it came out, but have been a die-hard PC gamer for most of my life. This changes everything. It offers so many features from the Playstation network... all free! The graphics... well, blu-ray is certainly the future of home video. I cannot find anything negative to say about it so far. Buy It!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Awesome !!!
PS3 one of the best purchases you can make. Like everything in this world, it has its shortfalls but I feel the pros outweigh the cons.

While you mull over a 40G, a lot of people are going to suggest going for the 80G due to its backward-compatibility, but its up to you to decide whether you will be actually playing any PS2 games. I, for myself, has not played a single PS2 game yet, after buying the new console. True, the number of games for PS3 are not high, but now every couple months there is a big release. Don't kid yourself - you are not going to burn through all the games before another gets released. At least, you are not going to, if you have another day job :).

Also, 40G has 2 USB ports compared to 4 for the 80G. This might be a reason for many to choose 80G. I personally don't have any issue with this, and if I need more USB ports I will just use the Belkin USB hub that I have.

Also, if you are planning to have only one console for your home think of this - you don't need to buy another Blu-Ray player.

The Verdict: AWESOME !!! (at least till PS4 comes out :D )

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - much bigger bump than the one from PS1 to PS2
Sony jumped way ahead of the console pack with the first PlayStation. The second version was a good solid improvement, but the third installment is another revolutionary product. While the PS2 did offer HD output, few games took advantage of it. The PS3 provides plenty of horsepower to drive high resolution graphics with a high level of detail. Games like Assassin's Creed and GTA4 leap ahead of the pack, dramatically improving on their PS2 predecessors.

People who own or were thinking of that other small white console will be happy to see that Sony's controller is motion sensitive, but not to the exclusion of traditional controls. Motion control is here to stay, but not at the expense of a good D-pad and a pair of high resolution analog sticks.

Finally, the hard drive upgrade is a snap. Sony provides instructions inside the box, and there are plenty of online resources you can google for.
