As a die-hard Spider-Man fan, I enjoyed this film. As a film critic, there's a lot to be desired.
The action and effects are easily the best in the series. Some of the most stunning effects I have seen. Unfortunately, the acting and dialogue is probably the worst.
The Good: I appreciate what elements Sam Raimi brings to this film from the comic, specifically, the Venom symbiote. It's a gutsy move to include it, because it's a stretch for the casual Spider-Man fan to digest an alien coming down and taking over Peter Parker (& Brock), but hey, it's true to the comic.
I also loved the Sandman action sequences, good use of his powers. But making him the gunman of Peter's uncle Ben was a little over the top for me, especially given the ending. To Raimi's defense, at least they give you SOME reason to understand the Sandman's motivations. I was really hoping Venom would be better utilized but he was more of a one-hit wonder character than anything substantial. He's more used as a device to demonstrate the alien's power over people.
In the end, the action sequences are wonderful and thrilling and found myself wanting to rewind and watch is slow motion more than once.
The Bad: Much of the dialogue is forced, failing to flow nearly as easily or believably as 1 or 2. Tobey Maguire seems far less comfortable with the character in this film, which is surprising and unfortunate. Too many homage scenes too, where the writers felt they should give EVERY character that's been in any of the first films at least 5-10 minutes of screen time (like the landlord and his daughter.) This was a huge complaint I had about Pirates II...give us substance instead of what you THINK we want to see more of.
Also, there's times where scenes are so unbelievable from a HUMAN standpoint, you almost can't believe the scene was ever approved. Case in point - in one scene, Gwen Stacy barely clings to a damaged building, dangling 30 stories up. Below are her father and boyfriend watching from the street. One would think they would be panic stricken, especially the father. Instead, both as docile as two strangers watching the evening news. They are so blase in fact, that Brock (Stacey's BF) takes the opportunity to tell the her father that he's been dating her. Meanwhile, she's second from death. I felt more panic from the extra in Spider-Man 1 where she's waiting to see if her baby is rescued from a burning building.
And my biggest issue should not be news to Hollywood - GOOD MOVIES DO NOT NEED TO BE 2.5 HOURS LONG! This movie could have EASILY dropped 30-40 minutes and been a great film. They spend WAY too long on needless scene after needless scene (the part where Parker shows up with Stacy at the Jazz club could have been a 5 minute scene; instead, it's dragged on for 15 minutes and it's not even a good scene.) What's worse, many of these unnecessary scenes are redundant - how many dramatic scenes do we need to illustrate the tension between Parker and MJ? I didn't count, but it seemed like 20 when there only needed to be maybe 3.
In the end, despite my complaints, I did enjoy the film. It's a must-see on the big screen given its effects and cinematography. If there is a SM4, let's hope for a less contrived and convoluted script.

Now you will see from my other reviews that I absolutely loved the first two Spider-Man movies. The hype for Spider-Man 3 was incredible and reached Dark Knight proportions. Unfortunately, Spidey 3 failed to live up to the hype. This was indeed for many reasons and I will touch on them all in this review. Don't get me wrong, the movie was fun and entertaining, but it was in no way comparable to the first two classics.
The main reason I think for this tragedy was that Sam Raimi had built up so much in the first two movies that he had to try and end all these stories in one. Spidey killing Harry's dad, the relationship between Peter & MJ and Peter struggling to get used to being Spidey were stories developing through the first two movies. Raimi had the idea that Spider-Man 3 would be the end all movie and he had to wrap up all the stories in one go. He also wanted to give us a new villain and a new twist on the character. The problem? Too much in one go. In this we're given the symbiote which would eventually create Venom. We're given Harry seeking revenge against Peter for killing his father. We're given the Sandman, another new villain that turns out to be the real murderer of uncle Ben.
Three villains, sure that's cool and all but when you're also given a stage when spidey is taken in by the symbiote and effectively becomes a bad guy, it becomes ridiculous.
Tobey Maguire has always been great as a geeky college kid who's the unlikely super hero. He's great at playing that role, but fails miserably when he's taken in by the entity and becomes arrogant and short tempered. There's a scene that takes place after Peter gets Eddie Brock fired from the Bugle which shows how he's changed. He creates this Emo rocker fringe and starts walking down the street as if he has some form of cramp. He starts pointing at people, winking at them etc. This is obviously to show the excessive arrogance. He also takes Gwen Stacy to a bar and he starts performing this ridiculous dance routine. I know the whole symbiote taking over Parker is meant to change him, and I do see the point. I'm not sure whether such similar events took place in the comics, but in the movie they were ridiculous and simply wasn't something that can be pulled off by Maguire. This alone ruined the movie for me.
The villains were great in the first two Spider-Man movies as there was simply one per film. In the finale we were given three. One, being Harry we already had a kind of back story to so that turned out OK. Sandman had to be introduced as someone new but we weren't really given much insight into the character apart from he was uncle Ben's original killer. Venom was the big selling point of this movie to a lot of fans. It had never been formally announced, but the character was shown in very brief glimpses in trailers. This was another new character that had to be introduced in the form of Eddie Brock. Beaten and embarrassed by Peter Parker when he was exposed for selling fake Spidey photos. Brock is taken over by the symbiote and bent on revenge he turns into Venom and wants to kill Peter Parker.
In order to really give us a great villain we need to be given more time with them and we need to see what makes them tick. With the Green Goblin he was taken over by greed and the odd performance enhancing injection. With Doc Ock he was a man of determination and with the manipulation of the tentacles he's not going to be stopped from achieving his goal. We weren't given that development with Venom and Sandman. We were just basically told "these are the villains, you have to hate them. Oh and don't ask questions."
Don't get me wrong. With all the negativity there are some good points to this. The fight scenes are typical Spider-Man fashion and completely awesome. If there is a fourth movie then I do really hope that Raimi takes it back to the original formula of just the one villain per movie. Simply three is too much.

This movie was the second best of the series (not as good as two, but better than one). Spider-Man finally gets the girl, thinks about marriage and seems overall happier. He and Mary J. get in a fight because she accuses Peter of being insensitive to her Broadway performance critique. The action was really good and I disagree when I hear people say that three enemies was too much. Finally, the last few scenes rocked! They were very emotive and if you're sensitive, prepare for some tears.
4.1 stars.

One of the better hits of Summer 2007. I figured that since it cost more than $250 million to make and market Spiderman 3, it was a bargain to see it for only $9.
Since I had already heard a lot of semi-negative reviews, I was pleasantly surprised by the movie. It's always best to go into a movie with fairly low expectations - since those are fairly easy to meet and exceed.
Spiderman 3 has plenty of action, romance, drama (someone is always crying) and criminals. I thought the story line was actually quite good for an action film, and besides some scenes which seemed wholly unnecessary, it was a pretty good show, though it does run a little bit long. Hopefully you will enjoy it.
