From the new DC Direct series based upon Terry Dodson's stunning rendition of Donna Troy as the new Amazon Princess, this depiction of Donna Troy (as an action figure) is fantastic. I would rate it as almost dead even with the other two 'wonderful' figures from Series I: Wonder Woman and Special Agent Diana Prince, as being easily among the best Wonder Woman figures produced in the last several years.
The criteria I am setting forth are as follows:
1. Does this Donna Troy figure accurately resemble its promotional photos?
Absolutely! As most collectors know, promotional photos (particularly, ones made public months in advance of the figure's actual release) can be rather deceptive, as one terrific figure is promised but then, the released figure will pale in comparison to the photo. In this case, I would say the promotional photo and the Donna Troy figure are at least 90% identical. In other words, the resemblance is pretty much dead on.
Also, I was impressed as to how even the figure's eyes matched the photo. For whatever reason, some DC Direct figures have barely visible (i.e. poorly painted) eyes, but you can clearly see this figure's eyes from a distance.
I give DC Direct an excellent grade on making good on its advertising for this figure.
Score: 9/10
2. Does the figure have much articulation (for display purposes)?
Honestly, I don't have any idea as to the number of articulation points this figure supposedly has. All I know is that it is at least functional in terms of basic movement. As a collector, my primary concern is that it can stand proportionally on its own using the enclosed display base w/o tipping over. I didn't have any trouble positioning the figure on the base, and it stands perfectly.
Still, your choice of display poses is fairly limited.
Score: 8.5/10
3. Do the figure's accessories enhance the figure?
Yes! You certainly get your money's worth with a sword, magic lasso, and an attached crimson & silver cloak. The magic lasso hooks on to her hip, but the sword comes w/o a sheath, so the figure grasping the sword is about your only display choice for the weapon.
Score: 9/10 (a sword sheath would have been appreciated)
4. Is the figure an excellent investment (or as a recommended addition to an action figure collection)?
Definitely! Right now, the sale price on the figure seems remarkably low, so if you can find one at this time, you would be making a wise and low-risk investment. Besides, the sheer novelty of Donna Troy as the 'new' Wonder Woman is certainly worthy of adding this figure to your collection.
The other ones in Series I would highly recommend are Wonder Woman (an exact likeness to the promotional photo) and Special Agent Diana Prince (same story). Unfortunately, I haven't viewed the Circe figure, which would complete the quartet, so I can't hazard an opinion on it.
Score: 10/10
5. What do I think, overall?
If compared fairly to the various other Wonder Woman-related figures produced by DC Direct in the last several years, I would say this figure deserves to be among the front runners. Also, it has at least a slight advantage over the two recent versions of Donna Troy from "Infinite Crisis: Series 2," as this figure's face, unlike the other two, closely resembles the promotional photo.
For the low price alone, Donna Troy as Wonder Woman is an excellent collector's find and a worthwhile investment.
My final score: 9/10
