My son, a big Doctor Who fan, begged me for a sonic screwdriver. I saw several offered on the Internet, and I chose this one as being midpriced, with the added bonus of including the Doctor's psychic paper. When it arrived, I saw it was a little flimsier than had at first appeared--it's mostly one solid piece of plastic with a few moving parts. Buttons are painted on, rather than being separate pieces that can be pressed. Still, my kids had fun pointing it at things, pushing the one working button and seeing the end light up blue and the hearing the "Whrr-whrr-whrr" sound it makes. The psychic paper is just a sheet of vinyl that you write on with a fluorescent pen, and then it luminesces when you shine the sonic screwdriver on it. Kind of cool, but not what psychic paper is actually supposed to do. I guess the beauty of psychic paper on the show is that it's always just a blank sheet of paper--no special effects necessary.

While having the removable tip and UV ink is probably fun for the young ones, I'd prefer to have a Sonic that had a permanently attached tip. Nothing some crazy glue probably won't fix.
From general use, the slide switch cover on mine has come off several times but it's been easy to snap it back on...so far.
It claims 2 sound effects and it does actually have 2 but you practically have to have it up to your ear to hear the difference as they sound almost identical at arm's length. (Did I get a bad sound chip?)
Being the first toy/prop marketed for the new Who, this is a very good effort. But hopefully, an improved version will be produced soon. I'd recommend this for any Who fans ages 10-910.

A good quality reproduction of the Doctors ever-versitile sonic probe. Only gripes I have with it are only two sound-effects and it doesnt accuratly represent the one seen on the show. Mainly color differences but whos checking? The UV pad included didnt work very well the first time (had trouble erasing the uv-pen ink.) Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase.

I have had this device for about a month and I am still having fun with it, even though people think it is a light saber. It alternates between 2 sounds when you press the button. It is hard to hear in a crowded bar or restaurant, but at work people can usually hear it 2 or 3 cubes over. The bottom of the device is a UV pen that can be detached and replaced with an ink pen. If you are good at slight of hand you can confuse people by writing with one tip and giving it to them with the other tip. Some other uses I have found for this are: using as a flashlight in a power outage, fixing the paper towel dispenser in the bathroom at work, rebooting my blackberry, and using as a joystick for my laptop. I still can't figure out how to lock doors with it though.
