I'm addicted to Columbo DVD's - any word on the next batch? I'm assuming they'd be 1990 TV movies - it's been a while since the '89 set - and they were coming out left and right before that. I'd like to know! Thanks in advance for any info.

Columbo had been already experienced, messy, and nutty from Season 1 through Season 7 Box set. After 10 years, he's more experienced, messier, and nuttier. Besides, his raincoat pockets seem to contain something more!! Indeed, he seems to crawl under the bathroom sink and trash bag quicker, more thorough among fallen leaves on the ground, etc. He keeps asking "right questions" for "his details" with "just one more thing". I expect the rest of the Columbo films will be on DVDs as time goes by. Not in a rush, just to tie up each "loose end" for his "report". SY

I am sorry to say that the revival of the Columbo series starring Peter Falk proved to be a major disappointment. It was not a true continuation of the magnificent original series, but simply a way to cash in on the Columbo-Peter Falk name using the degraded quality of television that began in the 1980's and continues to today.
First of all, the nature of the Columbo character changed considerably. The original Columbo was "modest and mildly eccentric". Towards the end, certain experimentation was made by exaggerating his up-until-then quaint, charming quirks and thus making him "arrogant and goofy". Those episodes in the original series that did this were generally among the poorer quality ones, and this was dropped in favor of the original personality in the final episodes. On reviving the series, it was decided to continue with the "arrogant and goofy" persona. By "arrogant" I mean that whereas in the earlier episodes, he was involved in a cat-and-mouse game with his suspect and he would delay confronting the suspect head on, leading the suspect to underestimate Columbo's intelligence and abilities, often causing him to trip up. When he became "arrogant" he developed the attitude that "I am the great Columbo and I will bring you down!". This removed much of the charm from the stories.
Secondly, the nature of television changed considerably in the interim between the two series. Whereas in the 1970's, lighting and camera work were natural looking, this was changed into using odd lighting and colors that seem almost surrealistic. Sets, which in the original series, used classical furniture and warm colors with expansive wooden staircases and fireplaces, turned into sterile, souless, "modernistic" sets. Much more explicit references to sex entered the dialogue and this is simply an excuse for lazy writers to avoid having to think of clever dialoge.
Thirdly, whereas Peter Falk and everyone else realized that they had to work hard to make the show sell and later become famous, in the revival series, he and all the others knew they couldn't make the show without him, taking away a lot of his motivation to put in a good performance, and it certainly seems that he is simply going throught the motions.
The bottom line is that if you are interested in Columbo and haven't seen the original series, start there and give this a pass for the time being.

Columbo - Mystery Movie Collection, 1989
Columbo is always good. I love his laid back pseudo farcical attitude. His frumpiness and ostensible dunderheadedness is what trips up the bad guy. How can a dork like this catch me? - Then he trips himself up.
I love Columbo and will always buy any DVDs of his stuff that come out.
