Though pretty standard fare, I cannot fail to be mesmerized by Voigt's performance here as Pope John Paul II. Of course, this comes after more than half the film's gone, and one must endure the ever-annoying Cary Elwes as the young Karol Wojtyla--Voigt only steps in the Shoes of the Fisherman when Wojtyla ceases to be Karol and becomes the pope. His accent, body language and impeccable skills give us shivers, especially in the final acts of the movie. If you have no gripe with Elwes, it is fascinating though a bit 'optimistic' the way the makers evoked the Poland of the mid-20th century, and the war torn Poland that was left behind. As I say, get this for Voigt's performance. As to content and flow, well, don't expect much, even for a low-grade TV biopic: this film really doesn't deliver.

I loved this dvd! It showed a very intimate look at an extraodinary man and his love for God and humanity. You saw Pope John Paul II for the divine leader that he was, and also his very human and emotional side. This movie leaves you with a "good feeling of hope" that it is possible for our leaders and us to work together to solve issues thru proper communication and love (God's way) rather than trying to solve issues by fighting and hatred. You will have a new respect for the man, the position, and the Catholic Church. A must see movie!

When I saw that Carey Elwes was going to play the Pope, I said, "yeah, right." I only watched it because my husband wanted to. Even though I considered Pope John Paul II a great spiritual leader, I figured the movie would be boring. Not so! Both of us like it so much that it's hard to loan out to friends. We usually want to watch it again before they return it.
