This deluxe 3-disc CD set, "Headquarters Sessions" from The Monkees gives the listener a unique opportunity to hear for themselves exactly what went on during the recording of their classic third album, originally released back in 1967. For the first, and thus, only time during the 60s, the boys worked well together as a cohesive unit, performing and recording every instrumental and vocal arrangement on every track. The 3 CDs feature rough run-throughs of several of the songs that would become part of the album's official line-up. In some instances, the band can be heard warming up, exchanging banter, and speaking with the booth enigneer. Also included are the original backing tracks, which play almost like karaoke versions of the "Headquarters" songs. You might find yourself actually singing along with these tracks; I know I did. A real stand-out highlight is hearing the alternate mono mixes of the entire album presented with an entirely different running order, including a couple of extra tunes not found on the originally released LP. The Monkees may have not actually played together as a complete foursome on any of their other 60s albums, but they sure succeeded on this one. This marked the first time in which they were able to exert total artistic control over the entire production. And, it shows. One listen to this CD, and you will walk away with a much clearer understanding at how they put it all together.
