I was watching a Christmas-New Years marathon of the Twilight Zone last year; and was pleasantly surprised. Many shows that I watched and loved in 1960s haven't aged well. The Twilight Zone: the Complete Definitive Collection is not one them.
Even though the story lines are tied in with Supernatural/Paranormal/Horror/SciFi, it is solid plot lines, acting, characterization and well timed lighting in a Black and White setting. It's easy to suspend your disbelief with the lack of special effects. There are a lot of famous actors before they were.... Some players are what you would expect. William Shatner is well William Shatner in good stories. For those who remember Elizabeth Montgomery as perky Samantha in "Bewitched", she makes you forget that in "Two" as a grim, tough soldier. Jack Klugman and Jonathan Winters make impressive dramatic appearances as well. Even in the Monster of the Week type of shows, your special effects spoiled mind can get past that with the ironic plots. In "One For the Angels", a particular favorite, they opted for no effects at all. What could have been the MOW was an ordinary man in a suit. It made for even more apprehension. Our main character could see our ordinary man in the suit, everyone else could not except at certain times. It had a theme that's common in TWZ of unintended consequences and the main character dealing with those. Without giving anything away it was a sweet story.
Some reviewers may find this a minus; there are few bonus materials compared to other sets. I also found the 4th season to be the weakest because of the hour long format. The stories seemed to drawn out and seemed to have too much filler. With TWZ less is more and they returned to that formula in the 5th season.
This is a set that, for myself, is a real keeper. I got this as a tax refund splurge and I don't regret it.

If you are a fan of the twilight zone, buy in bulk...it WILL save you money...This box set is great, you even have the treat of seeing some of the old commercials for other tv shows in the era... Each episode also has the air date, its pretty cool. Instead of renting movies everyweek, just splurge on this box set. I bought this box set almost a year ago, and I still haven't finished it yet.

Had to return my copy of this great series because I'm hearing impaired and it doesn't have closed captions! I enjoy my shows with closed captions!

This was purchsed as a gift and was very well received. The DVDs are being enjoyed by all generations of the family, ie those of us who remember the weekly episodes during the 50s and 60s, the young adults who have seen the rerun episodes on TV, and the young children (10-14 year olds) for whom the stories are not overly frightening. The listings make it easy to find a particular episode. It was a great gift!
