Believe me, you do want to take the right aapproach to making your first film. Dont make a movie just for the sake of making a movie. Most people write crappy scripts, then make crappy micro budget films and call it art. ART? These guys are taking the experimental approach. Think about it. Only narrative work sells and people don't want to see how you feel but what can they get out of a clever story. I would focus mostly on organization and putting together the best script in the world. if you have that, everyone will come to you.
And those of you who believe that they can make a film for $200 please let me know how crapy it came out. You need at least $20,000-$30,000 to make a digital feature. And if you dont pay anyone and your film sucks and your organization sucks, then everything else will fall apart guaranteed.

When I wanted to learn how to make film, I went to Hollywood to see how it was done. I've worked on everyything from soft porn to really famous movies. When I leave Hollywood, I often run into aspiring film makers. They all seem to own this book. And I tell them all the same thing: throw it away. Forget they read it and start over. (I actually read this book several years ago) Yeah, you can make a feature for 15,000 dollars. Or way less. Turn on your camcorder with the lens cap on. Call it "Darkness". But what is that going to do for you? If you're not going to learn how to make good film, if you're not going to learn to do it right, then you're just wasting time and money. The author doesn't seem to understand how a crew really works, or script format, and he advised winging it (the script) on the day. Let's say the sun is going down in 15 minutes, you don't have enough light to continue, is this when you want to go through your notes trying to figure out if every piece of dialog, every single shot meshes with the others? On set is no time to screw around, even if you are not paying your crew. That's a good way to loose friends. He goes on and on about making "art films", which is a way to describe crap that nobody wants to see anyways. All films are art, some better than others, many just unwatchable. What do you wan't from your film? Think about it. Think about the film makers you admire, and learn how they did it. And, before you buy a book from anybody, find out what they have done to EARN THE RIGHT TO TELL YOU HOW TO DO IT. This author hasn't made any film of note, and he never will. One other reveiwer has mentioned Rick Schmidts one-man-band approach to film making, and that's dead on. What is the quality of music from a one-man-band? The sad truth about this is that you can make a feature for a song, but not this way. And I'm not saying that hollywood is the only way, but I've helped out on films made by people who belived this book, and I've wasted my time. If you want to make film, volunteer as an unpaid production assistant, or go to film school, or go work in the industry, but remember that the quality of your learning will never exceed the quality of the projects you work on. Yeah, this was a rant, but this book makes me angry. Professionals laugh at trash like this, and this isn't the only book out there written by someone who hasn't earned the right.

I would recommend this book on the bases that if you want to get into film making then you should see how this guy went about doing it. It is not a bad book but is a bit technically challanged. For instance the writer has a huge section on building your own editing suite for actually cutting the film by hand. This may be good for some film makers but you will certainly get better results if you meet up with an actual editor who will cut your film for you while you sit by his side.
The book basically tells you what you need to get up and started and how to go about shooting your first film on a low budget. This book is pretty much written in a "One-man-band" sort of fashion and although it is possible to make a film this way you would do a lot better by actually meeting up with people who know a little bit about film making too - probably in a film school or weekend course. Anyhow, lots of helpful hints and tips but you will need other books to supplement this one and you will need a bit more help from experienced film makers (even amateur ones) to help you on your way.

Congratulations Rick !
I commend you on all your efforts, perseverance and your success, as I recently purchased your book. I am inspired by your strong will and determination to show people that Hopes & Dreams do come true! Reading the Preface gave me a great deal of insight into pursuing my 23 year dream of producing my own feature film.
I researched several books (online & at the bookstores) before purchasing yours, I am very happy with my choice. You have written this book as if you are with the person and coaching them along, a very nice personal touch, Once again Rick, Congratulations on your success!
Cheers: Steve in BC.
