On several songs, The Monkees almost achieve Beatledom.
I can give no higher compliment.
The Monkees were a very good band who, because of their perceived "fakeness", are seriously underrated and overlooked. Naysayers should give this album a listen.
If you're a Monkees fan, you'll love it. If you're not a Monkees fan, give it a chance.

As an 11 year old kid I originally got my vynil LP for Christmas 40 years ago, so when this CD arrived it was like welcoming back an old friend. Time has made irrelevant the debate on whether they played on their recordings. Just enjoy the melodic quality of these songs as they effortlessly flow from beginning to end (even the goofy `Peter Percival...` is locked in my memory as the perfect introduction piece for`Pleasant Valley Sunday`).
It now seems that bumping into Monkee songs is one of the true guilty pleasures for my generation, and I greatly recommend readers of any generation to give it a try.

THIS CD SHOWS, THAT THE MONKEES CAN PLAY WITH THE BEST STUDIO PLAYER. THIS CD IS ONE OF THE BEST. A LOT OF CREDIT GOSE TO CHIP DOUGLAS,WHO CAN TAKE A T.V. MAKE BELIEVE BAND INTO A REAL BAND. MIKE AND PETER KNEW HOW TO PLAY. BUT MICKEY,THINK ABOUT,HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN JUST SIT DOWN AND LEARN HOW TO PLAY DRUMS IN A FEW YEARS AND SOUND THAT GOOD. AND DAVY WHO CAN SING WELL,AND PICK UP ANY PERCUSSION AND PLAY VERY WELL. THIS CD SOUND GREAT IN STEREO AND IN MONO. A LOT OF GROUP INFO,THE COVER LOOKS GREAT TOO. THIS IS A CD THAT YOU CAN'T PASS UP. MONKEES FAN OR NOT,YOU WON'T BE SORRY. AND THE PRICE IS JUST RIGHT. JUST SIT BACK AND ENJOY.

I barely remembered their TV show when it first came in 1966, I was only four at the time, then I've became a HUGE fan of The Monkees since 1975 (after I started watching there shows on syndicated channels). None of there LP's existed at the time. Then Arista (bless them) released their Greatest Hits collection in 1976. A few years later, imported LP's from Japan started to come thru my local record shop. I bought their Debut thru Birds, Bees & Monkees. The sound was good, but their was not enough base sound to it. Then...1994, Rhino gave The Monkees the respect they deserve, releasing ALL their albums on CD, each in a nice special casing, liner notes AND unissued bonus tracks. Too Bad The Beatles didn't get this treatment( way over due ). In 2006 and 2007, Rhino did it again EVEN BETTER!! I have the first (and best) four of their Deluxe Editions-more bonus tracks, a lot more liner notes, PLUS the Sound Quality of both Mono & Stereo are superior to anything released before. I only hope the will do the same with the five original remaining CD's "The Birds, The Bees and The Monkees" thru "Changes". We Can Only Hope...

First of all, I love this album. I consider it to be the best Monkees album, and a good example of what the band, with producer Chip Douglas and select session musicians could have been capable of producing for the rest of the decade.
Having said that - this two-disc "deluxe edition" doesn't offer much added value over Rhino's one-disc edition. It contains mono versions of the tracks, so if you need those - great. If not, the alternate takes aren't much more interesting than what exists on the first edition.
Now here's the bad part. Rhino was very sloppy in assembling the bonus tracks. In a few cases, bits of one track flow over onto another track number. This could easily have been rectified, so I'll just chalk it up to a rush job on Rhino's part.
