got one pink and one blue for Christmas this year for my 2 1/2 year old girl and 4 year old boy-- they love them- some games are more suited for this age than others- girl loves the Diego game- call them mini-games where you move shapes into missing pieces- and count penguins- my son loves the Cars racing game- however I can't quite figure out how to keep the level down to where he can answer the questions so that I won't be trapped at his side the whole time he plays- we have had no trouble with his game - her game (and she plays less) stopped working after a week or two- Amazon sent us a replacement immediately- no problem! that was awesome- easier than going to a store- I had debated between the vsmile and this- I think that I am glad I got this- but don't really have any experience with the other to compare-

This was a Chrismas gift for my 4 year old daughter this year. I had a difficult time deciding between the L-max and the regular Leapster and finally decided to spend the extra money so my daughter would have more ways to use the system. I should have saved the money and gone with the regular Leapster. The L-max when not plugged in to the TV is a wonderful learning system that my daughter uses almost every day. Our problem is with the system when it's attached to the TV. The cable does not connect tightly to the L-max and any pull on it makes it loose it's connection. If the L-max is turned upside down and the cable is not pulled on it still falls out. This is frustrating and my daughter doesn't have any intrest in using her system with the TV anymore.
I have replaced the unit once and the second system had the same problems. Until Leapster can address this problem, my advise would be buy a Leapster without hesitation just not an L-max.

My daughter loves this game- she is constantly asking for the sound of letters, and then she writes down on paper what she sees on the screen. It gives her lots of independent time. She prefers to play it in her hands than on the big tv.

We adopted a 3 year old from a foreign country. She spoke only Russian when we met her. After a few weeks of being home, she had learned the alphabet song and was learning her letters, but she had never been taught how to write or even how to color in the lines. She hadn't developed the fine motor skills that you use when you write and draw. We bought her this l-max "computer" along with with a few cartridges. She learned how to use it and within one week of using the Letter Factory cartridge, she was able to recognize and write all of the letters in the alphabet. She plays with this until the batteries run down and she has to play with it plugged into an adaptor. This is a wonderful, wonderful product that is worth every penny that we spent. I particularly like that the l-max can plug into the TV for the L-Max cartridges (something we haven't tried yet) and that it can also use the regular Leapster cartridges.

My kids love this toy. We bought each of them a leapster and 6 cartridges between them. They played the preloaded games for days (especially the drawing function) before even getting into the games. Only two drawbacks. My son's stopped working after one week. Amazon is handling the exchange well. My 3 year old son enjoys clicking around through the games, but there are not many games available for 3 year olds.
