There is something special about a program that does not receive the multiple syndication deals where you can watch the repeats over again that makes this particular series treasurable. This is a great family program like all Cosby shows have been. The fun thing about watching it with my little daughter is that we share one thing in common; she does not know the show appears to be dated and I don't care! We just laugh at the hijinx poor Mr Kincaid goes through like the dog that kept him awake at night. Or, where he was innocently jogging past a pay phone and it changed the whole day for him.
My family are huge Cosby fans because of the quality of art he produces. He shows how you can be side splitting funny and communicate a human message without uttering any trash words or with it trashy themes. My family will support that kind of quality and artistry any day!

The Bill Cosby show DVD brought back wonderful memories of watching this show back in the day. It was great to watch Chet Kincaid, gymn teacher played by Cosby go through his comedic routines with many guest stars such as Henry Fonda. I am glad that I bought the DVD and would recommend it.

Long before Seinfeld was smugly stating that his show was "about nothing", Bill Cosby collaborated with some very funny and smart people to make THE BILL COSBY SHOW.(not to be confused with The Cosby Show or channel 2's Cosby.) Here, Mr. Cosby plays Chet Kincaid, a Physical Education teacher in a California city proximal to L.A. His character is a genuinely nice guy and is almost always willing to help students, friends, family or even strangers in need. His good naturedness is his greatest strength but also in a very funny way his pitfall as some very amusing situations result from his efforts. Mr. Cosby was absolutely right to fight NBC to not have a laugh track on the show; it is SO much better to have one's entertainment laid out without any pretentious prompting on when to and when not to laugh. As I mentioned, there is sort of a mental comparison to Seinfeld as Chet Kincaid's escapades don't seem terribly important, but they do bring laughs and an admiration for the way the material is set up. The quality of the prints is excellent with nice sharp color and clarity.(I believe there was one episode where the sound was SLIGHTLY fuzzy for a few minutes) The episodes are sprinkled through and through with a lot of recognizable actors/actresses who were then in their own right stars or would become as such down the road. The editing and music by Quincy Jones are sublime- they are one of the best aspects of the show, next to the classic, truely original and brilliant comic interpretation by Bill Cosby. Starting in 1969, the show(at least for me) had sort of a psychedelic/mod flavor to it as you see funky art and knick knacks in Chet's apartment, going to all sorts of "hip places" and even in the opening and closing credits which feature a multicolor "block picture" style with bright saturated colors and Cosby himself doing his own singing by improvising lyrics and sound effects, most notably the Hikkyburr- a product of the loose/friendly jam sessions he had in the recording studio with friend Quincy Jones. This is a very enjoyable box set of yesterday/yesterdecade entertainment and Shout Factory and Cosby should be highly commended for their efforts.(see Cosby's interview about the show- very interesting.)My only criticism: WHERE THE HELL IS SEASON 2? I don't think I quite buy the excuse that the 2nd season needs heavy restoration- the 1st season allegedly had exceptional quality elements to work with, so why not Season 2? It is no secret that althought the show did pretty well for ratings on a Sunday night, NBC WAS irked by Cosby's tooth and nail fighting to keep the laugh track off the show. I suspect that some degree of network grudgework is in play here legal wise and it is being held up deliberately. Let's hope Season 2 comes out soon as it is very memorable and fun. Lastly, come on Jerry: did you get some of your ideas for your show from Bill's work? Things that make you go HMMMMMMMMMM..........

This is just a good series.
Bill Cosby is just very funny, both with one liners and his physical comedy in this series.
I'm not sure if I'm biased, because I grew up with television that moved at this pace, with a story line, and a moral. It's just quality TV. It has a real "L.A." feel to it, with a lot of exterior scenes also.
The value for this 4 disc set, and 26 episodes is a good deal, and would also make a great gift for anyone interested in this period of television history.

Original series, takes a while to get going but a great way to start a career in comedy.
