This is one of the great war films. Nothing more needs to be said. However, in comparing this DVD with the previous, the main differences are that this is remastered, and it is anamorphic. That means that if you have a widescreen HDTV, this film will be shown in its widescreen glory. The same cannot be said for the previous version, which I own and have compared. THE FIRST VERSION CANNOT BE SHOWN ON A WIDESCREEN SET AND SHOW THE WIDESCREEN VERSION in the complete size that one expects on widescreen. The initial version will have widescreen proportions, and be smaller. If you increase its size, you will lose sharpness. I just had the opportunity to view this DVD, and the print is excellent, heads and shoulders above the previous version. It is anamorphic widescreen with a 1.85 : 1 ratio. The extras are pretty good. There is the full frame movie that was a sequel to Dirty Dozen, and a nicely done half-hour feature discussing how the film was made. All in all, a nice package. It is a welcome DVD from the first mediocre non-anamorphic version put out a few years ago.

The big differance between the dual disc and single disc release is the dual disc is in dolby digital 5.1 sound.

U.S. Army Major John Reisman (Lee Marvin), an officer who seems to have an attitude problem and who seems to like fighting with his superiors, coupled with an ability to get difficult things done right, is assigned by Major General Worden (Ernest Borgnine) to command a seemingly impossible mission. This mission is to parachute behind enemy lines just before D-Day, the 6th of June 1944 and kill large numbers of German military officers at a rest and relaxation center in the German rear area. This mission is further complicated by the fact that the men that Reisman is to command are all convicted criminals who are either on military death row or serving lifetime sentences. If they accept going on this mission and survive it, they will all be pardoned for their crimes. In other words, a difficult mission for a difficult man.
The Dirty Dozen is a classic example of just how a war movie should be made. It features a well written script, solid acting and competent direction and cinematography. The Dirty Dozen is one of the single best movies ever made about World War II even if both the mission and the men depicted in it are entirely fictional.

If any film deserves special edition treatment it is this one. I also read that the made for TV sequel The Dirty Dozen: Next Mission will be included. Telly Savalas who played Maggot would go on to play Major Wright in two more Dirty Dozen TV movies. Lee Marvin showed why we all love him in these roles, he was born to play tough guy parts and play them convincingly. Marvin was in the pacific during WWII and saw action.

After decades of high expectations, I finally saw THE DIRTY DOZEN for the first time on Cinemax and was very disappointed.
The film, while offering an impressive all-star cast to rival THE LONGEST DAY, was more farcical than action-packed, more silly than dramatic and in the end, not very well acted, either. It was almost like watching a two-hour movie of HOGAN'S HEROES or F-TROOP.
Some have called this "a real man's action movie". Am I the only one who noticed that Lee Marvin's character acts effeminately gay throughout most of the first half of the movie???
In the end, I think the only good memory I will have of THE DIRTY DOZEN is Tom Hanks' reference to it in SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE when he and his brother in-law sarcastically recall the climax like two weepy women.
"Of course, I cried at the end of The Dirty Dozen."
"Well, who didn't."
