Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Giacchino's Magnum Opus
I am something of a film-score buff, and I can say, without hesitation, that some of the most beautiful original score music being composed today is, in fact, not being composed for the big screen: it's Michael Giacchino's weekly output for "Lost." This mysterious and beautiful music elevates what would otherwise be an entertaining (if a bit silly) adventure series into a fascinating and dramatic character drama.

The 27 tracks on this album are culled from 17 episodes of the first season of the show (a very handy guide in the liner notes lists which tracks corespond to which episodes), and are primarily cues which fall into two categories: dramatic character underscoring, and jarring, nervous action music. A few pieces of quirky composition aside -- such as the amusing "Hurley" music of "I've Got a Plane to Catch" -- the album largely focuses on the two primary uses of music in the series: to ratchet up the drama of a scene by a couple of notches, or to crank up the suspense in a "Monster" or "Others" encounter.

Perhaps one of the greatest strengths of the "Lost" scores week-to-week is the way every cue is linked to past musical passages. Simple melodies are varied upon to underpin the various bittersweet stories of the survivors of 815. The album highlights this interconnectivity without ever becoming repetative.

Sadly missing from the album are some of the first season's brighter, more playful musical moments, such as the cue playing under [MINOR SPOILERS] Charlie's climactic escape in "The Moth," and the similar cue when Kate makes off with the case Sawyer drops from the cliff in "Whatever the Case May Be." Regardless, the album represents an excellent sampling of some of the more significant musical moments from the show.

Label Varese Sarabande described a "Lost" soundtrack album as "the most requested title we have ever encountered." For this requester, the final product didn't dissapoint. Here's hoping that this is the first of a series of albums, filling in the few signifiacant ommissions here, and highlighting Giacchino's ongoing work for the show.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Something's missing
On the website www.losthatch.com was a sampling of the music from Lost. On it was one of my favorite pieces, it ran about 3 minutes and I would play it over and over. It was so relaxing and beautiful. It was a pretty main part of the score during the first season and I thought for sure it would be included on this CD. However, it wasnt. And the producers of Lost asked that the music be removed from their website in anticipation of this CD release so I cant listen to it at all now.

Some of the more calm and melodic pieces on the CD are either started or ended with a loud, tense part as it was played on the episode. I dont think this was necessary to replicate the piece exactly was it was played originally, and it scares me when I am in the midst of listening to a soft piece of music and all of a sudden it changes so drastically right in the middle of the track! It seems like no one song has a consistent tone all the way through.

I am really disappointed that my favorite pieces were excluded from this CD and that the few songs that are really pretty arent pretty all the way through. I wish I could have listened to the soundtrack all the way through before I bought it. I wouldnt have made the purchase.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Mumia Abu Jamal is guilty!
The main purpose of this review is to assure Locke fans that his "Walkabout" theme IS on the soundtrack (inserted into the 6 minute 'Locke'd Out' track, which as a whole is excellent), in spite of what another reviewer (who must not have listened to the whole thing) said.

This is the score of the show, so as has been noted, the various songs featured in the series by other artists are not here. What IS here is Giacchino's excellent score, which isn't available anywhere else (unlike the tracks people complain about.) If this is what you want, you won't be dissapointed.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Alas, it is here...
Well, it only took them - what - nearly two years?

If you're a fan of the show, then it is somewhat difficult not to be fan of the musical compilations that adorn it. The writers of this show clearly recognize when words are no longer adequate, and thus it is left up to Michael Giacchino to convey the emotions of the moment. And, what a terrific job he does. Rarely are Giacchino's compositions used as ambient melodies, but more often they become the focus of a scene. Indeed, there are moments when I think the show was written for music (can you tell I'm a fan).

Naturally, there are the usual action melodies, but only a few: "Run Like, Um... Hell?", "Monsters Are Such Interesting Things", and "Run Away! Run Away!." Even so, there sound is remains unique. My favorites - and I am certain most would agree - are "Credit Where Credit Is Due", "Win One For The Reaper", "Locke'd Out Again", and "Life And Death." For me, theses songs characterize LOST, and without them there would be no LOST. As for the remaining tracks, they are equally enjoyable.

As great as this soundtrack is, it is missing some key music from the show. Specifically, none of the songs that Hurley listens to are on this soundtrack, which are sometimes just as moving as Giacchino's music. Yes, I realize that you can probably download them individually from ITunes or buy the original albums, but I feel they were needed on this CD. Perhaps, ABC will release a Hurley Collection.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Michael Giacchino Provides An Emotional Undertone With This Beautiful Score
Michael Giacchino started out composing video game scores, and recently did The Incredibles with Brad Bird, and now comes the brilliant score to LOST. LOST is my favorite show on TV right now, and the music is a huge role in the show's success. While I love Giaccchino's work, I am all about Hans Zimmer. Zimmer is my favorite composer and will always be that way. I was thrilled to read in the album notes that Hans Zimmer's music was originally used in the Pilot to pitch the show to ABC, but later Giacchino came in to compose an original score. With LOST Giacchino was able to really let his creative mind flow, and in return has brought an incredibly brilliant show a life of its own. The music is not overpowering, it let's the show do its job. It does have a presence though, and it can make you curl up in tension or even let the tears roll down your face. It's a beautiful piece of score.

The tension is built with flowing string instruments and the tempo picks up as the tension does. When the tension goes full throttle he'll bring in "out of this world" percussion and usually end with a peaking trumpet (cue commercial). Track 22 is a great example of the peaking trumpet, and track 3 is a good example of percussion. It really creates the perfect mood for the stories.

The emotional pieces are usually led by string instruments complimented with a gentle piano, the most noteworthy of the album being track 26. This is the piece used at the end of season 1, when the survivors part ways and send the raft out to sea. A truly breathtaking moment that will fill you with emotion. He compliments the emotion of the characters completely, and this is why the show works to such a great effect. It looks like creator J.J. Abrams has found a new companion in the business since he brought on Giacchino to compose Mission Impossible 3, which Abrams is directing.
