Hill street Blues paved the way for shows like NYPD Blues (same executive producer). The different characters struggle both at work and in their private life. It depicts somewhat the reality of life in a dangerous neighborhood in the Chicago area, even though the name of the city is never mentionned. 25 years after it was first broadcast, it is always a great pleasure to watch this great show.

As of 2006, the first two seasons of the outstanding HILL STREET BLUES are available on DVD from Fox, which is releasing the MTM catalogue slowly (verrrrry slowly). If you have never seen the series, you are in for a treat! This is the show which redefined the police drama, and much of television drama in general. It was the first series to present police officers warts and all, and consistently won praise from officers all over the United States. It was also the first series to utilize multiple story arcs which would play out over several episodes, a technique which has been adopted to varying degrees by many, many series since. Outstanding writing from producer Steven Bochco, Michael Kozoll, Jeffrey Lewis, David Milch and others elevated HILL STREET BLUES to feature film quality, and kept it there with few falters for seven seasons. And what a cast! Daniel J. Travanti, Veronica Hamel, Bruce Weitz, Betty Thomas, Michael Warren, Taurean Blaque, Kiel Martin, Rene Enriquez, Charles Haid, James Sikking, Joe Spano and so many others, seasoned television veterans all, gave some of their finest in the service of HILL STREET BLUES. And, of course, one must not forget the late Michael Conrad as Sgt. Phillip Freemason Esterhaus, the Hill's resident father figure and confessor, the late Trinidad Silva as the gangleader Jesus Martinez, who offered depth and humor to what could have been a simple stereotype, and last but not least, Dennis Franz, who vaulted into the collective consciousness with the rule-bending yet absolutely mesmerizing Lt. Norman Buntz.
Both seasons are absolutely worth owning! I hope that Fox gets the remaining five out soon. Let's roll!
And, hey, be careful out there. . .

Hill Street Blues was one of the most inovative shows of it's time. The writer of the show did an excellent job at looking into the daily life of urban america and the troubles of the times. Even though the show did not base the show in one city, it reflected many cities throughout the country. I showed this show to my students at school on our free friday and they loved it. I try to expose them to different things and try to relate things to their time of hip hop.
