I do not typically write reviews, but decided to write one for this product. My 2 1/2 year old son wanted a race track set. I checked out "Hot Wheels" tracks because that's what my brothers used to play with when we were kids. You can't find the old tracks. All the on-line reviews for the new tracks were terrible except for this one... This is very simple, but IT WORKS! I have not found any problems, and the batteries do not run out quickly. ...If you are looking for a track that works, this is it.

While my son absolutely loves the starter track set and it is exactly what he asked of Santa, it has problems. After about 10 minutes of operation the motor inside comes apart. My spouse fixes it quickly, but it is quite a pain. Unfortunately, Santa threw out the box to return it.

We bought this set for our 4 year old son for Christmas along with a Hot Wheels pack of cars. It is his first Hot Wheels set, and a good starter. My husband said we had to get a set that had at least one loop in it. The set is not too hard to set up, but I will definitely keep the instructions around for the first 1-2 times that I have to set it up to make sure I get the tracks together right. It is battery powered, so make sure to have 2 D batteries (we forgot those and had to wait until December 26th to play with it properly). When we set it up without the batteries, my son would manually push the cars around the track.
The next day when we got the batteries, it was exciting to see the cars shoot around the track. As they pass through the motor, it shoots them through with enough force to get all the way around the track and through the motor again. You can place 2, 3 or maybe 4 cars on the track at the same time, and see them jumping over each other as they come down the loop. After awhile, you have to push the tracks back together, as the force of the cars going around the track causes it to pull apart. My son also has turned on just the battery powered part when it is not connected to the track and placed car after car in the motor to make them shoot out, which can be a bit of a hazard if our 2 year old or the dog is in the path of the shooting car. My husband had him shoot them into a cushion after that.
My son is a real Thomas the Tank Engine and Cars movie fan, so we thought it would be a nice next step away from more Thomas engines and tracks. He still likes his Thomas trains and his Cars, but he plays with this too as long as I help him set it up and stay there to supervise especially when his 2 year old sister is around. When he gets older, he will be able to set them up himself, as he already is able to break it down on his own and put some of the pieces together. But now at 4, he needs me to put it together for him.
It's not so big that it's too much trouble to set up and take down in one play session which is the other reason I like this starter set.
