The Best of the Electric Company

In association with Amazon.com

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Plus! Taught me then my daughter to read
I loved Electric Company as a kid, and I am convinced that it helped me become a very early reader. Thirty-five years later my family acquired the DVD collection and were amazed to watch our four-year-old immediately start applying the lessons to words she encountered in everyday life (in books of course, but also often on street signs or commercial trucks). She remembered sound-and-letter-combinations like "ch" and "ow" and "ea" and used them with delight. Now she's in kindergarten and her teachers have mentioned that her peers have a lot of trouble with silent E, but not our little gal. She knows what turns a "cap" into a "cape," etc.!

I recommend this set to anyone and everyone, but especially to parents who themselves grew up with the Electric Company. It is so fun to hear songs and watch sketches that were long buried in the archive of my memory.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - not what I expected
Not only is the return policy terrible, this movie has too many adult interviews to entertain little kids.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Blast from the Past!
This past summer (2009), Electric Company came back on TV - - once a week on Fridays. I was so excited to watch it with my three kids (ages 4, 4 and 6) because I grew up watching it. I was so disappointed because, while the new episodes tried to teach reading, the show is so modernized with things like rap and kids are now the "stars" of the show. It just wasn't what I remembered. I was so excited to find this boxed set of the REAL Electric Company and we bought it for our twins' 4th birthday. Not only do THEY love it, I love watching it with them. My 4 year olds are really learning to sound out the words and to see how the substitution of one vowel can change a word like "rim" to "rum" (not sure why they used "rum" on a children's program, but hey, it was the 70s!!) I was surprised to see the star cast including Bill Cosby, Rita Morena (sp?) and Morgan Freeman. It's so fun to watch with my kids and I think they love knowing that it's something that I grew up watching. I'm so thrilled by it, that I just bought the second boxed set!!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Turn on the Power!
This dvd set brings back wonderful childhood memories of watching television and learning with a smile. I really never thought I would see any of this stuff ever again and would like to thank Shout! for making this dvd set possible.

This set contains several episodes from each season. Thinking back to the early 70's while growing up I would have to say the definitive seasons were two, three, and four. The changes that were made starting with season five, as I remember, annoyed me for a few reasons. The music behind the newer opening "moving up in a new way" sounded like NFL films music and towards the end of the opening instead of repeating "the electric company" three times, it was sung only once. For some reason this turned me off; however, the drum roll with "the electric company" being spelled out was new and really cool. Also, the show started to lose it's "groovyness". I conclude that by that time I had learned much and was getting bored anyway - time to move on.

I must say watching these episodes again brings back a time of happiness and thoughts of being young. We sure didn't realize we had it so good - growing up and learning with The Electric Company! Maybe I should get my three year old nephew to watch some of these episodes and see what happens!

As an adult now and looking back I can say the casting of The Electric Company was nothing short of brilliant. The show also had the perfect mixture of word learning, humor, and music. Highly recommended.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - still the best!
My son lived for the Electric Company every day when he was a child, so now that his daughter is 5, he suggested that us grandparents get this set of DVD's for her. She too, has watched them and already memorized so many of the familiar songs we all knew from 35 years ago. It is just as educational as it was then and the skits just as entertaining.
