I've had great praise for Sony products in the past. I've had my tv about 3 years and the quality of the picture was excellent.
Under 3 years, the picture tube is shot. The tv repairman commented that many customers had the same problem. The warranty had just ran out. I'm going to look at other brand of televisions.

We just replaced my mother in laws ancient 27" Sony with a new KD32xs945 and she is as happy as can be.
Her principal viewing is standard definition cable which in her little town will be 4x3 for a very long time indeed.
This set is the perfect compromise for someone in her situation. The standard definition 4x3 performance is as good as her rather poor cable company puts out.
We also hooked up a simple Radio Shack UHF antenna to this thing and it is pulling in five local DTV signals. The HDTV signal is stunning even in letterboxed form.
We also set grandma up with an older DVD player with component outputs. It is not a progressive scan machine but with the sets built in line doubler who cares? The picture is terrific on DVDs.
Like all new television sets you will have to dial the chroma back a little and set the picture to warm for best results.
All in all this is a very good choice for people who still watch a lot of 4x3 programming and don't want to see it pillarboxed or stretched as it would be on a 16x9 set.
It only got four stars because the tubby little rascal about blew out one of my discs lifting it onto a stand. If someone else had done that job I would have tossed in another star.
I should also mention that the built in speakers do a very good job. It fit the bill for us.
