I love this soundtrack, a component of a fabulously made film!
Just watching the DVD on how they made and developed each aspect of the movie - the end product shines as a highly credible and 'believable' story. The restraint shown, inspite of the subject's 'fantastical comic book heritage' lends authenticity to the whole piece, the actors, the sets, the performances, are beautifully enhanced by this muscial score.
Bruce Wayne/Batman - the turmoil, discovery of purpose, and resoluteness in following his purpose is cleverly portrayed through each track. This begins to set a recurrent 'anthem' which the audience begins to recognise, and starts the 'spine tingling' in anticipation akin to the OO7 theme striking up in a Bond move - the excitement that something important featuring the central character is about to happen. Can see this score as a crtical part of the armoury that will (and should) be deployed in the following Batman movies.

I tend to listen to things obsessively, I'll admit that. On the way to and from work for over a month now, I've kept this CD going. It's that good. Pirates of the Carribbean 2 had kept that slot warm for the months prior to this one, but I think I found my new musical obsession. Heck, I'm listening to it right now, and I'm not driving... yes, I bothered to go out to my car, turn the car on, retrieve my CD, turn off the car, and walk all the way back into the house to play it while I work.

I love this movie and the soundtrack so much! It is very relaxing and an absolutely beautiful instrumental!

The reinvention of the Batman franchise did much to erase the farces that were Batman Forever and Batman & Robin from the mind. The film did a great job of making Batman into a real person instead of some stale comic book hero with silly neon colors...
Anyway, the musical score is wonderful. Gone is the campy comic book themes from the previous films and instead we have beautiful and stirring music.
Hans Zimmer is one of those composers who always does a good job. Batman Begins is one of his best.

After reading the on going debate between previous films' and Batman Begins' soundtracks, and then listening to this soundtrack for almost four weeks in a row, I decided to give my own contribution to the debate.
Yes, it is different from the previous movies, but it is also supposed to be different. As it was Nolan's intention to approach the idea of Batman differently, with realistic approach, so did Zimmer and Howard do with Batman's music. If you are looking for some fast tempoed, "Elfmanish" witty and picturesque music, this is not the right soundtrack for you. But if you instead enjoy far reaching musical landscapes that set up the moods, themes and atmospheres, this might be a soundtrack for you.
Yet, to name Batman Begins soundtrack as a pure mood record would be a simple underestimation. For the soundtrack have subtle and almost ingenious ideas that open very slowly. It has no particular Grand Batman Theme, but various little thematic scenes that are modified and played repeatedly through the tracks (named after bats). In a way the record in itself is the main theme that grows and develops. The four or five distinctive themes together build up the final main theme and varies it through out the whole record. The fact is highlighted by the fact that middle tracks' "Barbastella, Artibeus, Tadarida, Macrotus, Antrozous and Nycteris", which first letters form up a name "Batman".
The style in some parts appear similar with Blade Runner and modern classical music, as well as both Zimmer's and Howard's most noted works (such as Gladiator or The Village), but blends them nicely together. The varied themes and their futuristic, bit scary soundworld creates a record that stands out in itself, even without the movie. Partially for this reason I believe Zimmer's and Howard's composing work avoids the one rather poignant problem that plagues most of the film scores: it stands time.
