I have both a Nitendo DS and a PSP and they are entirely different devices. The PSP has much more and advanced technology built into the little form factor. You get wireless internet access right out of the box (with a code update) a high resolution screen, an MP3 and MP4(movie) player, and a movie player. The UMD is really quite an amazing technology that Sony is completely screwing up by keeping proprietary, and that is my only complaint of the entire system. And soon with the newer 2GB+ memory cards you will be able to download games instead of needed to purchase a UMD! It really is a portable media device with adult oriented games. If you are over 16 then I would strongly recommend this device as your primary travel friend.

This is easily the best videogame playing system I've ever owned! Although, not a true console, it is a full-fledged gaming system, and that, I believe has always been Sony's intention. That is to provide a all around gaming system to appeal to all types of gamers.
Okay, no, you won't see Grandma or your typical soccer mom toting one of these around, like a walkman, but I honestly don't think that was Sony's intent. They were always intent on providing the hardcore gamer, such as myself, an outlet, to game on the go!
A little bit about myself. I was one one of those guys who actually bought the portable screen and battery for the PSOne. Yes, that's right I carried my system on BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) and played my favorite PSOne games on the go. I'm also not your typical gamer. I fall outside of the typical age range (I'm 40), however I am male. And I'm a business man, not some college student with hours of time on my hands to kill. In fact, I have fewer hours these days, due to another baby in my house.
That's what makes portable gaming so brilliant for me! I can game when I want to, on my schedule, and on nobody else's! And when I picked up the PSP, I picked it up, to enjoy all types of media. And PSP offers it. I was able to get my music and video watching in with my gaming. I play very little games these days at home, but I use my PSP at least 1 - 2 hours per day, to and from work, and sometimes on breaks. I can play virtually any game I have on my PS2, on the PSP, just slightly different versions. And now I can watch movies on UMD. And music. A cinch, downloading from my personal CD's and other online music supply sources.
I even listen to Podcasts I download from my favorite radio stations. No Ipod necessary here. I got my "I-PSP." Bangin'!!!!!!!
I'm honestly surprised to see everyone keep comparing UMD's to DVD's. After all, how many times have you seen somebody toting around a portable DVD player on public transportation? Not more than 5 times I bet. I pay attention to that kind of thing, and I think I've seen about 5 or so, over the past 10 years. And laptops are usually being used for computing, rarely watching of movies. But, with many major studios offering most of their movies on UMD, I have a solution.
Yes, I know UMD's are falling out of popularity, and Walmart might stop carring them in their retail stores all together, but Amazon carries the highest selection, much more than any other retail or online store I've seen. And so what. Games will continue to be produced during the normal lifecycle of the PSP.
The best videogaming console purchase I have ever made. 'nuff said!

first off i like to say this thing ROCKS!!!!!! I have to admit the sound shoud be alot beter and the sound on the games are much better then the movies for exzaple I watched i robot on it i soude have mute it well i can't say enye more then this

The PSP is a great device with amazing capabilities, movies, games, and music all rolled into this portable sleek device Sony has made. It has a very bright screen, that can be adjusted by clicking on a button which can be very helpful at times. It has a analog stick like the PS2 controllers just that my analog stick is a little malfunctioning but never mind that.
PROS:
The PSP is portable hence the name (play station portable)
An external brightness controller can be helpful at times
A nice speaker for its size
An spacious illuminated screen
WiFi(Wireless Fidelity) and internet capabilities
The software is great! I havent had any problems yet with the PSP so far
It has a slot for a MemoryStick Duo
Nice headphone controller for when you don't want to take the PSP out of its case
It has an UMD (universal media disk) slot
CONS:
The UMD isn't really universal, the UMD won't fit into an DVD slot or a computer DVD reader
Your finger prints and grease attracts to the screen
Not a good battery life, i've seen better from a crappy camera
Analog stick doesn't preform as good as I expected
All games from the PSP section don't come with case and you need to buy the cases if you don't want your games all scratched up
The value pack doesn't come with a USB connector which was a big bummer for me
So the PSP is a great choice for gaming and movies on the go, but if you really want something that isn't as expensive as the PSP but still can play games then the Nintendo DS is a great choice for you.

If you want to buy this CRUD, don't!!!! If you are buying it beacause of its DVD player thing, buy a portable DVD. They have bigger screens and richer sound!!

Save your hard-earned $$$$$ for something you really want.
Now, if this is something you REALLY, MUST HAVE, go for it.
It is OK if you buy it, but save your $$$ on a DS. Save about $200 on a DS.
