The DVD is of very bad quality and there are no subtitles.
Certainly, the DVD isn't expensive. I would've preferred to pay more for a better quality. It's frustrating.

I'm not sure about the other DVDs in their catalog, but I was pretty happy with the Madacy transfer of THE SHOOTING. It's the first time I've found it letterboxed (although it looks like it might by 1:76 rather than 1:85, barely noticable by how closely cropped the credits are) but otherwise the color and picture is brighter and sharper than I've ever seen. There is some slight distortion from time to time (from what looks to be degeneration of a video master) but this is rather slight and probably only noticeable to those who are picky about such things. Sure, I'd love to see Criterion release this (along with Hellman's CHINA 9 LIBERTY 27) but for a bargain DVD the Madacy disc left me more than satisfied.

i've been hearing about this film for 20 yrs and after finally seeing it i am not quite sure what to think; i rather liked it. At the very least it ISN'T boring, as some people say, but it is WEIRD. And that's what works; for me, at least; that sense of unrelenting strangeness that seems to emanate from nowhere.
i think the film, for me, was made more palatable by the fact that i was forewarned of its strange qualities; after reading what other people have said about it i can almost guarantee that they went to this film cold, with no expectations of ambiguous weirdness.
if you have an attention span that can be sustained for longer than 30 seconds at a time and appreciate low-budget ingenuity in service of David Lynchian weirdness(in a western setting, no less) then THE SHOOTING has many rewards.

Madacy Entertainment is really promoting the bootlegging of DVDs with their release of this extremely low quality product. The menu links are dead, so the only way to naviagte the disc is by randomly pressing buttons on your DVD player's remote control and hoping that you access the feature you're looking for. Once you figure out how to access the main feature, you'll notice how poor the quality of the transfer is, both audio and video. Known cheapies like Front Row Video and Alpha Video both put out better quality products than this; and for a movie that really deserves Criterion treatment, this is just disrespectful--to the movie and the paying customer.

... for this movie to be released by a real studio. Madacy not being yet out of business is only the proof that crap's lovers are far from being an endangered species. Whatever the price it's still much too high for their products.
