As another reviewer stated, those who loved the original series were 'spoiled' by the original Star Trek series. I was one of the skeptics who loved the original series. I awaited the debut of this 'new' Star Trek show totally prepared to dislike it as a pathetic 'wanna-be'. I am happy to report that I was delightfully surprised with what was presented to me in the new series. There were some things about the Next Generation that took some getting used to. For one thing, I missed Spock - the character Data, at first, seemed a pale copy of my Vulcan hero. In addition, I had trouble with (forgive me Mr. Stewart) with the new captain of the Enterprise being bald. I also struggled with the new Number One... The chemistry between Kirk and Spock was so unique and subtly humorous- It took time for me to embrace this new Captain/Second in command relationship- it was wonderful, yes, but was so different than the latter.
The long and short of things: I was hooked after the first season! I grew to love the new chemistry of the entire Next Generation crew as much or more than that of the old series. As for the lightly haired captain... I think of Patrick Stewart as one of the sexiest guys on film! Oh, yes... Give me a bald leading man ANY day.
NO, the new series isn't the same as the former, and frankly, if they'd tried to make it the 'same', Next Generation would not have done so well.
So, I can say as a passionate space/science fiction junky- both on film and in literature, this is a 'must have' series.

If you are a Star Trek person, this serie is a great one to own.
Great episodes, great actors with amazing characters.
The reason it gets 4 stars only, is because of the low quality picture due to the old TV recording technology. Watching this serie on a big screen TV is less than satisfactory, however you get use to the lower resolution after watching few good episodes. And now with the low price that Amazon is offering this complete 7 seasons, I say it is really worth it. Enjoy

In 1987, following the success of four big screen films that resurrected the short-lived 1966-1969 sci-fi television show called "Star Trek", writer/producer Gene Roddenberry (1921-1991) created an entirely new version of the "Star Trek" television show set approximately 100 years after the time period of the original TV series and big-screen films. Entitled "Star Trek: The Next Generation", the new TV series premiered in 1987 and was broadcast for seven years. Though Mr. Roddenberry did not live to see how successful his new TV series became, or the other "Star Trek" TV series and big-screen films that were produced later as a result, his legacy continues to inspire new generations that are drawn to the optimistic future that he envisioned.
For his new starship Enterprise, Gene Roddenberry created an entirely new cast of characters to be the ship's crew: Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), Commander William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Lieutenant/Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), Lieutenant Worf (Michael Dorn), Commander Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), Lt. Commander/Commander Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) and Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner). During the show's first season, there was an additional main character, Lieutenant Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby), but she chose to leave the show to pursue a career in film that did not exactly materialize. Following the show's first season, there was some concern that Dr. Crusher was not a popular character, so she was replaced in the second season by Dr. Kate Pulaski (Diana Muldaur, who had appeared as a guest star in an episode of the original "Star Trek" TV series in 1968). However, fans of the show were so upset by the replacement of Dr. Crusher, producers brought her back in the third season and Dr. Pulaski was never heard from again. A wonderful regularly recurring character was that of Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg), who ran the ship's bar located in "Ten Forward"; but one recurring character became an essential plot element in the show's premiere, final episode and several key episodes in between: the alien known only as "Q" (John de Lancie). Another wonderful recurring character was Deanna Troi's mother Lwaxana, played by none-other-than Gene Roddenberry's widow, Majel Barrett.
"Star Trek: The Next Generation" did marginally well with ratings during its first two seasons, but the show's popularity began to rise significantly during its third season, especially with the final third season cliff-hanger episode "The Best of Both Worlds, Part 1". In this very exciting episode, the Federation comes under attack from a deadly & powerful cybernetic race known as "the Borg", who were introduced to the crew of the Enterprise thanks to "Q" during the second-season episode entitled "Q Who?" In fact, it was the Borg that had destroyed Guinan's home world many years earlier; so she knew all too well their power and tenacity. Fans had to anxiously wait during the summer of 1990 to see the episode "The Best of Both Worlds, Part 2" at the beginning of the fourth season to find out what would happen. After these pivotal episodes, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" never had to worry again about its ratings.
Of the many episodes that were aired during the show's seven seasons, the episodes that I think stand out as being the best would have to include the following:
Season 1:
1 & 2. "Encounter at Farpoint, Parts 1 & 2".
17. "Home Soil"

23. "Sarek"
26. "The Best of Both Worlds, Part 1"
Season 4:

7. "Dark Page"
13. "Homeward"
16. "Thine Own Self"
25 & 26. "All Good Things, Parts 1 & 2"
Overall, I rate all seven seasons of the phenomenal sci-fi TV series "Star Trek: The Next Generation" with a resounding 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it. Many thanks go to Gene Roddenberry, as well as to the many actors, directors, producers and everyone else who brought Gene Roddenberry's vision to life.

I am STUNNED that this show is nearing its 20th anniversary. Just in the past couple of months, I have been catching up on the old episodes; although I remember being thrilled by the show when it was first on the air, TV has gained so much in sophistication since then that I expected to have only a nostalgic interest in most of the shows. To my delighted surprise, TNG stands up as fresh and invigorating TV even now. Aided greatly by masterful performances by Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner, the show found its way past its uneven first two seasons, when it tried too hard to walk in the footsteps of the original series; then, in the third season, the show finds its characters and its voice and comes alive. The pace is slower than on great current-day shows such as "Alias" and "Veronica Mars," but that's the way TV was, then -- also, I find it sort of refreshing to see them taking so much time to just revel in small moments among the crew. The third, fourth and fifth seasons of TNG are about as good as TV gets; though the last two years weren't as strong, there are still some knockout episodes, including one of the greatest series finales ever. I can't afford this whole set, but if I ever win the lottery, this goes on my shelf.
Top 10 Episodes:
1) "Best of Both Worlds," parts one and two
2) "Sarek"
3) "Sins of the Father"
4) "Family"
5) "Chain of Command," parts one and two
6) "Lower Decks"
7) "Hollow Pursuits"
8) "The First Duty"
9) "Parallels"
10) "Frame of Mind"

I purchased the whole 7 seasons and so far I love it however there is a problem with one of the DVD's. On the 4th season, the 1st DVD, the episode of "The Family", the program continually freezes through out the whole episode. There is no one to contact to find out if this happened on all the DVDs that were made. The set was brand new and still sealed so it had to have left the factory that way. In the future someone needs to have a contact address or number for situations like this so any problems can be resolved.
