I saw this as a teenager living in Europe shortly after it came out. It's one of those clever story lines that you don't forget. Of course Walter is fantastic in the lead role. No high budget film but an excellent example of how a great story can be told with great actors and it doesn't need much garnish--much as in cooking with really great ingredients! You let them speak for themselves. I Highly recommend this little forgotten GEM!!! Watch it, you'll be glad you did. I hate to say it (but it's so true I must) they don't make films like this anymore...and it's a shame!

I only recommend this movie to those who are fans of Walter Matthau (which I am). The script is fair at best, the directing is lackluster and corny, and Matthau's supporting actors in this movie seem distracted or half-hearted (except Joe Don Baker who couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag). If you are not familiar with Walter Matthau, there are other choices which have better writing and directing, and far better acting by the supporting cast.
The DVD itself has two major problems: 1) it's a 4:3 pan and scan; and the sound track is "noisy." The "focus" and other visual problems are not as apparent as other reviews might suggest.

Charley Varrick is a good film from the 1970's. It is not the best thing Matthau ever did but its a good evenings entertainment. And as in most Matthau against the world movies, he wins in a clever way.
As to this incessant diatribe about the aspect ratio. Ok, its not wide screen. Get over it. The company who put it on DVD knew it had limited appeal and choose not to release it in the wider format. Still looks pretty good on my flat screen. And as to this allegation of "Scan & Pan".
I do not know which DVD you watched, but mine was not scan and pan.
Buy it, its cheap and is a good once a year movie.

This was a pleasant surprise; better than I thought it would be, although I shouldn't have been surprised since Walter Matthau usually plays interesting roles.
What I appreciated was the realism of the story, except for two things at the end of the film such as no one coming to investigate a loud chase scenes and firebombing? Overall, the ending, however, was a very satisfying one, and one that brings you back for future viewings. Matthau also makes the film realistic, as he typecast perfectly for this role.
Other than Matthau, the cast isn't a big-name one but a lot of familiar faces and names from movies in the '60s and very early 70s such as John Vernon, Sheree North, Joe Don Baker and Felicia Farr.Andy Robinson, is a not a known name in movies because he did years of television, but viewers might remember him as the creepy "Scorpio Killer" in the first "Dirty Harry" film.
"Charlie Varrick" is considered a film noir even though it's 1973 and in color, but it's noir in story and that's good enough for me. This is definitely worth a look if you like crime films. The only thing that bothers me is why Universal refuses to put this out on 1.85:1 widescreen, the way it was shot.
