The Twilight Zone - The Complete Series (Season One) DVD

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Its 2002, get with the times..
I noticed that some people dint like this show & i can see why, cuz its new, its not the original.. the original series was cancelled a long time ago & people should be glad there are people out there tryin to ressurect the show. I for one saw this when UPN aired it & it started out pretty good, i did miss the 'racist' episode & i think if a black or a white guy were to run up to me sayin hes' being chased.. in this day in age i wouldnt let any1 i dint know in my car. Chances are they are runnin from the police anyways. Either way i think people judge too much when it comes to these type of things. If this show was done in the 60's people would love it, but now people are basing everything on acting, script writing.. its just crazy i think this series would have done well if people werent like that. If anything this show is much like the Xfiles without Mulder & Scully, plus the music was written by Mark Snow, the same person who did the Xfiles music. In my opinion this show is far better then the cr*p i see on tv now. But i guess thats all what people would rather watch. Its a shame this show dint last very long.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A fresh look at the Twilight Zone
First, keep in mind that the `80s Twilight Zone also was a contemporary remake, new stories with young and upcoming actors/actresses. Second, a popular music group also created a new tune for this series. Okay, now we have set the right frame of mind we can take a look at the 2002 Twilight Zone. The big difference is that it is just one story per episode so no more two or three stories per show. The other thing that is different when looking at this box set is the focus on actors. There is almost no info about the stories or the writers. It's all about who is playing the roles. Mainly because the younger generation has no clue what the TZ was.

But the big question is, is it worth the purchase? Is it something a die-hard TZ fan wants to see? My answer would be: DEFINITELY. We can all stay in the past and whine about how good things used to be. But people let's evolve. Let's open our mind for new things. Just experience this new version of the Zone.

Okay, the stories are a bit more predictable, more clear cut, and have a faster pace but that's modern television. So get used to the new voice. I especially liked that Forrest Whittaker is standing in the story and is not just some voice floating in the air. Integration is key in our modern society. :-) And about the new opening tune... Wow, I love the heavy guitar sound. A bold choice to have Korn's Jonathan Davis do the new version but it worked out great.

To wrap things up... Just buy the box set; it's dirt cheap (especially after the recent drop in price). You will enjoy some great stories, encounter a few mediocre ones, and even hate it for some crappy ones. But was everything so great in the old days?

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Underrated...and what's wrong with young stars?
I just don't understand all the complaints about the "hip young cast" in this latest Twilight Zone. The original series had known stars, or up-and-coming ones. The 80's series did the same. Why shouldn't UPN have used stars to get people to tune in? And while we're at it, Forest Whittaker does a fine job as host. I always felt his performance was sort of a tribute to Serling. He has a great voice, and that's about all I require from a narrator.

Most of the episodes are worthy of the Serling name as well. They're well-written, well-produced, and (usually) well-acted. Jason Alexander gives the performance of his career in "One Night At Mercy." Much attention has been given to the remake/sequel episodes, but personally they just reminded me of how great the originals were.

Look, there will never be another Rod Serling. And there's not likely to be another show as fresh and original as the Zone was in its original form. But this oft-maligned 2002 version deserves better.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Old School vs. New School
It took some consideration before I purchased this DVD set, mainly because I was concerned about the quality of the episodes. I only managed to watch a few episodes during its original run, and I enjoyed every episode I caught. Nevertheless, the reviews here made me doubt my own memories. I am extremely glad I took my percieved risk and bought the set.
There were a few clunkers (Jessica Simpson's episode was horrible, mainly because of Jessica Simpson; while "The Gun" was ridiculous) but the majority were quite good.
Yes, the series depended on the names of its stars to sell different episodes in the previews, like many television shows do. The thing many reviewers seem to forget is that the original Twilight Zone used this trick as well. (Robert Redford, William Shatner, etc.)
And finally, yes, Forest Whitaker was an odd choice for a host; however, I actually liked his delivery. He could rush the lines a bit at times, but overall, he had a wry humour and mysterious quality that fit the show. But, like all things, this
is a matter of preference. The one thing everyone should realize is that Forest Whitaker is NOT Rod Serling. No one ever can be, no one will ever read a script like he could. However, the show needed a host, and Whitaker did fit the bill.
In summation, this was an excellent series when judged by itself. The problem, is that it was updated for today's youth. This update, well, it changed the show a great deal. I believe that many of the negative reviews for this product come from older individuals, fans of the original series...rabid fans of Rod Serling.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Excellent
I hadn't heard of this series until it was released on DVD, and I bought it before I had the chance to read some of the negative reviews here and on the Internet Movie Database. Since I already had the package, I figured it was worth a try.

And, boy am I glad I gave it a chance.

I'm mystified as to what seems to have rubbed people the wrong way. This is a very well-done series. Good production values, good stories, strong performances. Of course there are a couple of clunkers in the set --- but Serling's original series had its share of stinkers, particularly towards the end. (Check out Season 5's "Probe 7 Over and Out" for an example of the most overdone cliche in SF. Serling said he was getting so tired towards the end that he was losing his ability to distinguish between good and bad writing, and this proves it.)

The Amazon reviewer says this series will appeal more to younger viewers. I was born in the 50s and grew up with the original TZ, and I thought this series was great, so draw your own conclusions.

I have purchased the 80s TZ Season 1, and this gets much better reviews. Again, I'm not sure why, but I've only seen the first couple of episodes of the 80s set, and I wasn't bowled over.

Of course Serling's original series is in a class by itself, particularly during the first three seasons, produced by Buck Houghton. No remake can equal it, but this set proves that there are new stories to be told within the TZ framework, and it deserves to be more widely seen.

If you haven't seen it, I suggest you try it and draw your own conclusions. You may be pleasantly surprised.
