EXCELLENT. Casting, dialog is right on the money. A must see film series for all Americans. Money well spent.

I do believe this is probably one of the most telling stories about WWII. A great if not the greatest miniseries ever made for television.

"The Winds of War" is the rare case of a mini-series based on a novel that not only captures the book but improves on it as well. That's mostly because Herman Wouk co-wrote the screenplay and thus much of the book's dialouge remains. It also helps that a good cast and excellent production values recreate the time from 1939 to Pearl Harbor.
The cast are mostly good with Mitchum and Bergen matching well as the couple in trouble and Victoria Tennett as the young lady in the middle. Ali McGraw sadly is too old for the part of Natalie and comes off a bit snide as well while Jan-Michael Vincent is a bit bland as Byron. John Houseman is good as Aaron while Ralph Bellamy makes a fine FDR. But the best is Gunter Meiser as Hitler. Rather than go over the top, he is subdued most of the time, the conniving madman who still inspired millions to follow him. His best moment comes at the surrender of France as he actually has a smile on his face at this moment of utter triumph. It's a shame he couldn't reprise it for "War and Rememberance" as it's a great portrayl of the man.
Overall, the mini does seem more like set up with its reliance on stock footage and narration of major events but does a great showing of Pearl Harbor and battle scenes. Overall, one of the best dramatizations of WWII and one of the best minis ever.

If this miniseries differs from how some of us remember history,
I'm sure that is our fault?
This series is about an American Navy family
pretty much from the point of view of the patriarch
and his sons. One son marries a Southern Bell and the other one a Jewish Princess( played by Ali McGraw). We all think the younger son has made the better choice?
The characterizations of Hitler and high Nazi officers can only be after the fact as they seemed to have their own countrymen pretty fooled until mid-war. The way in the third episode that Europe was caught off guard by the German invasion seems to show someone was a sleep at the switch in Paris and London? By this time Japan had most of China and
it was pretty obvious the Fascists were world domination
orientated. Jews were fleeing Europe as fast as they could get out.
Europe had from 1933 to 1939 to figure out Hitler's plan and just was too slow to get it.

Everyone in the family loves this mini-series. So why did I give it 4 stars out of 5? Poor video quality, plain and simple. Of course, I still highly recommend this set, but believe it helps if you know what you're getting up front; i.e., nothing here has been remastered. If fact, anything in the white(ish) spectrum has a halo effect and is overly bright. We watched it with the contrast & brightness lowered to reduce eye strain, and that did help somewhat.
Beyond that, I agree with everything that has been said about the series itself. It is simply outstanding! So I expect we'll be watching it at least once a year, every year, and will continue to hope for a remastered edition? How about it, Paramount?
