Being quite fond of Bruce Campbell's acting, I purchased this film after seeing all the positive reviews. I must say I'm glad I did! What a hilarious film! Bruce Campbell is playing a man that thinks he is Elvis (or is he really?) that is now located at an East Texas nursing home, where he is tormented by doubt and a damaged hip. Campbell is supposedly the real Elvis that changed places with a certain Sebastian Haff back in the 70's, because he was tired of all the fuzz that being Elvis meant. Hence, the person that died in '77 was only an impersonator, and today a sick and aged Elvis spends his days in a haze of medication and depression, unable to prove who he really is. He befriends a black patient at the home that is certain he is the real JFK, hilariously played by Ossie Davis. This JFK is certain that Lyndon Johnson got him put away in this nursing home to seize power. Campbell and Davis make up such a magnificent pair of aged celebrities in this film, you can't but love it.
Eventually, some of the patients at the nursing home start dying off, and our two broken flowers go on a mission to find out what is going on. Turns out an Egyptian mummy is eating their souls during the nights. Our two heroes therefore decide to go into action against the beast. The film is a wonderful, wonderful mixture of comedy, nostalgia and horror. Campbell does one of his best roles to date; he left me laughing loudly more times than I could count. Even though the language in the film is quite vulgar, and the humour the same at times, I would say this is one of the funniest films I have in my rather extensive collection.
If you like intelligent dark comedy, you MUST see this film. I can promise you that you'll have quite a good time in the company of the always excellent Campbell. 4,5 stars!

This has got to be - no - IT IS - the most off-beat story I've ever heard of. Here's Elvis and JFK - in present times - patients in an old age home somewhere in Texas, joining forces to track down and defeat a mummy who came back to life to terrorize its patients after his remains were brought back to life from the polluted waters of a nearby river that it fell into (while being transported on a bus after being stolen from a museum).
Y'gotta see Elvis - in his 70's (played by Bruce Campbell) and JFK (supposedly in his 80's), in a wheel chair(played by Ossie Davis - yes, he's black but according to the backstory, the CIA had injected dye into his body to make him black, and half or part of his brain is still in the White House). It's totally outrages to see these two historical figures (one in his sequinned jumpsuit and sunglasses while making all the Karate poses the King would make, and the other in a formal suit and tie rolling around in his wheel chair with a look of extreme dedication) begin their assault to take down the mummy. If you don't crack a smile and laugh till it hurts when you see this, you have to be brain dead!
My wife and I viewed this movie twice (the second time right after the first) - and always get a good laugh now and then talking about it.
If you're looking for something really off center (and would like to hear a very good music soundtrack) - get a hold of this DVD and once you do, then don't let go! Great bonus material as well!
Thankyuh, Thankyuh, Thankyuh Veruh Muhch!!!

Bubba Ho-tep has GOT to be one of THEE funniest Horror/comedies I've ever seen. Ossie Davis is nothing less than genius as he describes how an age-old mummy is going to suck the soul out of him thru his ARSE-HOLE! I'm still cryin' over some of the ridiculous scenes. If you have a warped sense of humor and like Bruce Campbell and/or Ossie Davis. Don't hesitate. "Bubba Ho-tep" will have you in stitches for many viewings!
Other movies that have similar humor styles are "Naked Lunch" "Kingpin" and "Heathers". Mind you, none of the movies are on the same theme but all require the viewer to have a warped sense of humor.

I rarely buy new DVD movies. It's not that I don't like the extras and "Making OF" features that the better DVD's have along with the films, it's just that with so many new movies constantly coming out I prefer to rent.
Unless the movie is something special.
About a year ago I saw Bubba Ho-Tep at The Egyptian Theater. I knew I'd buy the DVD the first time I spotted it.
Bubba Ho-Tep is special.
Last night Elvis Presley was in my living room. So was JFK. Elvis was a tired bitter old man who needed a walker to get around. John F. Kennedy was black. They slugged it out with a soul-sucking Egyptian Mummy to stop him from eating the spirits of the other residents of The Mud Creek, Shady Rest, Convalescence Home. No, I am not having a National Enquirer flashback. You just read the basic plot to Bubba Ho-Tep. As ludicrous as that plot might sound it worked perfectly.
The Elvis that Bruce Campbell played was a mournful old man. He knows that he had the world in palm of his hand and threw it away. Nobody believes who he really is. He let his life slip away and all that is left to him are his regrets that he wasn't a better husband and father.
The King is old and dying and he has a cancerous growth on a very private place on his body that's only going to get worse. (That's not a misprint. It really is in the movie.)
Enter Bubba Ho-Tep, a four thousand year old undead Egyptian Mummy who feeds on the souls of the living.
Ossie Davis plays JFK. He's an old black man who believes he is John F. Kennedy and he was only wounded in the Dallas shooting and he was dyed black from head to toe so no one will believe who he really is. Ossie Davis is a legend in the acting community and he brings so much nobility and class to his crazy role that even if you don't actually believe he is the former President you kind of somehow hope he could be.
Both of these characters are not your normal heroic figures. You'll see no bulging biceps in Bubba Ho-Tep. What you will see though is a very realistic depiction of what it's like to be old and forgotten and powerless. Hey, if JFK and Elvis can be discarded because they got old, what's in store for the rest of us? All of us, if we live long enough are going to be like these guys. Not a comforting thought.
Despite being extremely frail Elvis and JFK take on a thing that very likely will devour their immortal souls.
There are moments in Bubba Ho-Tep that will make you laugh and others that will make you cry. If you don't believe me, watch Bubba Ho-Tep and tell me that it didn't get to you just a little bit. If it doesn't, you're probably hopeless anyway.
Bubba Ho-Tep was originally a short story by Joe R. Lansdale. When I heard the movie was being made I found a copy of the story and read it. My first reaction was to say, "How in the hell are they ever going to make that story into a movie?"
I enjoyed the story. It was great! It had real heart to it and made you get misty eyed in spots. But it was so off the wall and unusual that it looked like it just couldn't be made into a good movie.
Well, I was wrong. Director and screenwriter Don Coscarelli (Director of Phantasm by the way) captured what was best in Lansdale's Bubba Ho-Tep and treated this weird off the wall story with the dignity that it's two ancient hero's deserved.
I give Bubba Ho-Tep a rating of 5 out of 5 for being totally unusual and for reminding me what great story telling is all about. You gotta grab the audience's attention, hold it and make them feel some emotion. Bubba Ho-Tep does that. Everybody involved with this movie did a great job.
I'll be watching Bubba Ho-Tep again in about 2 months. That time audio commentary (one of the special features) will be by Elvis. It should be fun finding out what The King has to say.

I am a huge Bruce Campbell fan. This was just plain strange. Bruce Campbell did a wonderful job portraying Elvis. It was just a strange storyline.
I did laugh though, and perhaps with some mind-altering drugs I would have loved it!
