I too, was pleasantly surprised by the lesser-known alterna-hard-rock acts on this disc (Trapt, Finger Eleven, Submersed). Along with Span's 2004 2CD masterpiece "Mass Distraction," this is one of the best guitar-driven experiences of the last year-AND that's saying something for a soundtrack to a movie!

This is one of my favorite soundtrack CD's. No bad filler songs here. I like them all. I bought the CD to hear new songs from some of my favorite artists. But I'm most pleased with this CD for introducing me to some new bands. I have now bought CD's by Edgewater, Seven Wiser, & Atomship. These bands are now among my frequently played CD's and I hope they continue to make new music. I plan to buy CD's also from Strata & Submersed. They sound like they have good potential. Most of the other bands are already known and loved. This CD was a real pleasant surprise. Try it, you'll like it.

The Punisher was one of my favorite movies from 2004, and this soundtrack accurately reflects the movie, while also giving me a chance to not think about how bad John Travolta was in it.
Anyway, the disc is packed with 19 tracks, a few of which are pretty bad, several of which are painfully mediocre, but there's a lot of good in here, too. Going by the adage of "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all," I'll just hit the highlights:
Drowning Pool "Step Up" - Getting the soundtrack started off right, Drowning Pool turn in one scorcher of a song. This song is as tough as brass knuckles to the teeth.
Queens of the Stone Age "Never Say Never" - an interesting cover from an interesting band that nicely breaks up some of the tedium on the soundtrack
Seether featuring Amy Lee "Broken" - I'm guessing this song is one of the major reasons people are buying this disc. Amy Lee has a great voice, and this song is really good, fitting the mood of the film (especially the interactions between Frank Castle and Joan).
Seether "Sold Me" - What a great chorus.
Edgewater "Eyes Wired Shut" - Solid song from a band I'd never heard of. Not enough to get me to buy their album, but I'll remember the name.
Hatebreed "Bound to Violence" - Love the Hatebreed. I've been a fan for about 5 years now, and this song is great.
Mark Collie "In Time" - Great way to close out an album. This song is as spooky on CD as it was puzzling in the movie (well, maybe not puzzling...but the whole setting of the song in the diner was weird).
Like I said, there's a lot of mediocre stuff on here, but not a whole lot that I would call bad. At the current price of used CDs, there's enough on here to make it worth your time.

Ok, How can anyone say that this album is not good? This album ROCKS (Though I dont remember hearing alot of these songs in the movie). Now, I address this album as a compilation of Rock songs, and a damn great compilation (19 FREAKING SONGS!!!) it is.
Song-By-Song:
1. Drowning Pool - Step Up - Good start. Not a favourite. I don't like the new DP as much as the old one. (75/100)
2. Puddle of Mudd - Bleed - I like this song, though I hate puddle of mudd, it's amazingly catchy. The singer does a very good job here too. (90/100)
3. Nickelback - Slow Motion - One of the funkiest catchiest songs I've heard in my life. Soaring with amazing vocals. This is one fo my favourites (95/100)
4. Queens of the Stone Age - Never Say Never - I like QOTSA. This is not one of their best releases. Doesn't really go anywhere. (75/100)
5. Seether feat Amy Lee - Broken - the "hit" of the album.. Amazingly overplayed. But still an amazing song (95/100)
6. Smile Empty Soul - Finding Myself - This song hits a nerve for me personally. Amazing acoustic song. (98/100)
7. Trapt - Lost in a Portrait - Very nice song. The chorus is amazing (88/100)
8. Chevelle - Still Running - Regular song. Gets old fast (70/100)
9. Damageplan f/ Jerry Cantrell - Ashes To Ashes - It's a good song, with an amazing chorus, reminiscent of old Metallica and Megadeth. (85/100)
10. Seether - Sold Me - Amazing rocking song. Seether's vocalist is amazing as always. And the chorus.. the chorus.. (92/100)
11. Edgewater - Eyes Wired Shut - Well, its a good song, but edgewater have so many better songs (85/100)
12. Finger Eleven - Slow Chemical - Very nice, kind of mellow, very moody song. The vocalist and the riffs are amazing. (95/100)
13. Ben Moody - The End Has Come - Beyond words, the standpoint of this album. GREAT SONG IN ALL ASPECTS (1000/100)
14. Strata - Piece By Piece - I like this song so much. It sticks to your head after a couple of listens. I like the changes between clean and distortion (98/100)
15. Hatebreed - Bound to Violence - Too much screaming. The drummer is talented. Slipknot fans rejoice! Not my kind of music. (75/100)
16. Seven Wiser - Sick - Very good song. Kinda catchy, with a very nice chorus. (92/100)
17. Submersed - Complicated - I like this song, but it kinda gets old fast. Plus the chorus isn't that nice (83/100)
18. Atomship - Time for People - That phrase "I found no people for killing time, so I found time for killing people" is amazing. The lyrics and music are very nice here (94/100)
19. Mark Collie - In Time - So soothing, takes me away to this place, feels like I'm in a desert. The lyrics are AMAZING. (98/100)
My Favorites: Bleed, Slow Motion, Broken, Finding Myself, Sold Me, Slow Chemical, The end has come, Peice by Peice, Sick, Time for people and In Time.
Bottom Line: If you like rock, good hard rock, get this CD NOW!!!

A first note on the soundtrack is that many of the songs do not really appear in the movie. More interesting is the fact the fight scene with "The Punisher" and "The Russian" is set to a song not even present on the disc. At best count, only one song from the disc is even fully present in the film. Strange to call it a soundtrack. Maybe "Songs inspired by 'The Punisher'" is a better idea.
And on another review... Virtually ALL the Marvel heroes are mortal. Spider-Man does age. Perhaps the only Marvel hero in film that may not die is Wolverine, but even he ages (else how would he be so big and strong and not just an infant). Collie's song may be fitting for all the heroes.
