Sigourney Weaver is the only really good cast member of this movie. The little girl is 2nd. Otherwise, the acting is just horribly bad.
The movie has none of the subtle menace of the original. The original was a work of art. This is just a (too-long) popcorn flick.
The special effects are very nice. But please, the props are "dated" because Ridley Scott's high standards of set design were allowed to erode. This is how you raise the budget hugely, yet end up with a cheaper-looking movie as a result.
Don't get me wrong, this is an entertaining movie despite some horrible, cringe-worthy acting and poor editing. But the original was a masterwork. Don't confuse the two.

This film has a completely different feel than the original film! This is a good thing, rather than make the same movie Ridley Scott did, James Cameron, goes all out in this explosive action Sci-Fi thriller! Great FX slow pacing and slam bang action make this one heck of a thrill ride!
The creature design has been tweaked in this sequel and we get to see more of it and we get to see more of them! The Queen is a site to behold and the finale is probably the best "Cat Fight" in film history! I rate the film 4 1/2 stars only because the length could have been trimmed a little and Bill Paxton is the most whiniest marine I've even seen, even though he delivers some of the best lines in the movie. The DVD transfer on the box set is fantastic and you get two versions of the movie and plenty of extra material. The box set is the way to go!

"Aliens" Directed by James Cameron
Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) barely escaped an encounter with an Alien. All of her crew and her ship were destroyed while fighting it. When the encounter ended Ripley places herself in cryogenic sleep for the ride home. Something goes wrong and Ripley remains in cryo sleep for over 50 years and is luckily found by a deep salvage mission. Instead of a reward for heroism Ripley and her story are met with skepticism by the company who owned the ship that was destroyed by the Alien. Her story is in doubt due to the fact that the planet from which the Alien was picked up is currently colonized and no Alien encounter has been reported. Ripley attempts to deal with what happened and the scrutiny and doubt she has received from her former employer. Contact is suddenly lost from the planet and the company request that Ripley accompany the military back to the planet to supervise the situation. It is promised that her pilot's license will be reinstated is she goes. Ripley can't seem to put the event behind her and needs to see it through to the end. Carter Burke (Paul Reiser) assures her that she has nothing to fear. The military will bring ample firepower to handle any situation...
"Aliens" is one of my all time favorite movies and has to be one of the best action / Sci-fi movies ever made. From top to bottom, screen play, acting, characters, action and special effects "Aliens" Does not disappoint. After reading other comments here it appears that all of the nay sayers of this movie are die hard fans of "Alien (The Director's Cut)" the original movie by Ridley Scott. It almost isn't fair to compare the two movies because although they share characters they represent different genres of film making with "Alien" being more of a horror movie and "Aliens" being and action movie. If I was forced to compare the two it is my honest opinion that "Aliens" is head and shoulders above its predecessor which doesn't usually happen with sequels. This may be due to my preference of action movies over horror movies but as I said it is really hard to make an honest comparison because the movies are so different from one another.
The Good: Great acting all around and great characters as well. One of my favorite characters is Hudson played by Bill Paxton. His lines provide some comedic relief but it isn't approached in the typical campy way it is in other action movies with lame one liners and the like.
The screenplay was great. A lot of action movies go way overboard with over the top comic relief, lame one liners, and indestructible good guys. "Aliens" plays it straight from beginning to end and it works spectacularly.
Great cinematography. The lighting and lack of lighting in the scenes was great and helps keep the movie tense. The soundtrack and sound effect were also an irreplaceable aspect and helped to carry the story and acting to the next level. Every time you hear the motion tracker beeping you know something is about to go down and the suspense starts building.
The Bad: Absolutely nothing.
Overall: One of the greatest actions movies made to date and if you haven't viewed this get to the video store and check it out!

I've listened to a lot of DVD commentaries before, and I'd have to say this is easily one of the best. Between the cast and crew, there are enough bits of trivia, hilarious anecdotes and behind-the-scenes factoids (technical and otherwise, like the hurdles overcome to get the film made) to keep just about any listener enthralled for the entire length of the movie. It could have been better with Sigourney and Paul Reiser included, but their absence isn't as conspicuous as you'd think since they are talked about plenty (all positively, of course).
The bonus disc is also interesting, but similar to the extras on "T2: Judgment Day," they are exhaustive and exhausting. Whereas most DVDs don't go into enough detail, I think Cameron's go into too much. These at least aren't presented in text form as they were on "T2," which was enormously tedious. It was really great to see the actors all these years later, including Carrie "Newt" Henn all grown up.
As special editions go, I'd say this one is worth every penny (even if bought at full retail). It's pretty rare to find a commentary that's almost more entertaining than the movie itself, but this absolutely is.

I ordered this to add to my collection and was very pleased. Loved the behind the scenes footage and the extra 17 minutes of restored footage. Just what a movie collector likes. Glad to have this as part of my Sci-Fi collection.
