I love it. I think it is a very good dvd collection.

I thought that the first season had the most interesting cases of all of the seasons, although I've loved all of them so far, even when they added Chris Noth to the line-up and started alternating detective teams. I really love D'Onofrio as quirky "Renaissance Man" detective Goren - it's a side we never saw of him when he played an "Edgar Suit" in "Men in Black". He is truly a unique character among TV detectives, seeming to linger in that gray area between genius and insanity. The show employs a heavy dramatic irony - the detectives track down people the viewer already knows are guilty - which makes it substantially different from the other two L&O's, as well as most law/cop/justice/detective shows. I have only two real knocks against the lay-out of the show. First, in this L&O spin-off, like in SVU, there is very little time spent in the courtroom. The legal maneuverings usually involve getting search warrants and the like - there are no dramatic trials. ADA Carver is a bit too much like SVU's ADA Cabot: smart, sharp, and good-looking, but ultimately without a lot to do. No wonder Courtney B. Vance (ADA Carver) eventually wanted to leave the show because he thought his character didn't have enough to do.
The second problem I have with this show is that Eames is not Goren's equal partner. Goren does all of the work and Eames just stands around being eye candy. Goren might as well tell Eames, at the beginning of each episode, "Go over there and stare at that potted plant while I solve the crime." It would be more honest. Imagine how the original L&O would have been received if Lenny Briscoe had done all of the heavy lifting and detective work for 12 years while detectives Logan, Curtis, and Green respectively sat around, got coffee, and acted as Lenny's chauffeur!
Finally, to whoever is making the decision on releasing the DVD sets of this show: Get a move on! It's been two years since we got the only other season of this show, that being season three. Quality TV is hard to come by, and this is definitely high quality stuff!

This third entry in the successful LAW AND ORDER franchise is wickedly good programming, with smart intelligent scripts and a dominating performance from Vincent D'Onofrio as off kilter detective Bobby Goren. D'Onofrio utilizes every bit of his physical and mental prowess to bring us a truly different "rogue" cop, who doesn't mind getting up in people's faces or sidestepping legalities to nail his culprits. It's a tremendous pleasure to watch this gifted actor work. Kathryn Erbe and Courtney B. Vance offer solid support, although Jamey Sheridan seems relegated to walk around and bark out orders. Even though we don't get to know much about the main characters' personal lives, the shows are so well staged, it doesn't matter. We do get inside the minds of the criminals though and it's great to see how Goren will nail the bad guys. I like it a lot!

I already gave a five star review of the CI third season, but I still want season two!!!
I will admit that by skipping season two, it showed in season three that while Detective Eames (Kathryn Erbe) was on maternity leave, Detective Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio - the best actor I have seen to date), it showed just how important Kathryn Erbe is to the partnership of Det. Goren and Eames. Remember when Det. Goren said to her replacement "Eames would have understood?".
As for D'Onofrio, there will never be an actor that can say so much without uttering a word (remember his "Hi Joker" scene in "Full Metal Jacket"?. It would have had just as much of an impact had Mr. D'Onofrio relied on his deviant look and facial expressions on its own, without the words. His body and facial actions are over the top and very appropriate for the scene. No words will ever express just how talented of an actor Mr. D'Onofrio is, so I will stop right here and give it a rest.
I do not know the dynamics of how and what a company decides to do to make a TV show into a DVD collection and I really don't care. Just give the masses what they want!
I hated the fact that in season five, Mr. D'Onofrio, (apparently on overload from a health problem), made the producers come up with a new team with Det. Logan (Chris Noth) and Det. Barek (I'm sorry, but I don't know her screen name) to split the season. Chris Noth as Det. Logan can pretty much hold his own, but the Det. Barek character seems detached. I have trouble hearing her, and am I the only one that feels whenever she speaks, it's as though she is thinking outloud?.
Since I'm on the "Where's Season Two" bandwagon, it's high time they bring out season four.

The acting and teamwork of Vincent and Kathryn is excellent. Mr. North would be an inferior replacement.
