The Tick - The Entire Series DVD

In association with Amazon.com

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - a delectible serving of justice ladled over the just picked strawberries of evil
I forgot just how much fun this show was and how much I missed it after its sudden departure from the airwaves.

This is a terrific escape from the world we live in, buy this and fall in love with offbeat humer all over again. There isn't a bad episode in the box.

Time to make the feature length movie!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent, Very Funny
Offbeat humor should appeal to mature fans of the comic and cartoon.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Java Devil! You are now... in my review!
This is a show for lovers of absurd humor. Take note Monty Python fans, listen up followers of Red Dwarf, etc. It is in no way meant to be taken seriously. Which is unfortunately what probably led to it's short life. The network just couldn't take it seriously. And you have to understand, really. Any program that goes around airing lines like, "Destiny dressed you this morning, Arthur, and now FEAR is trying to take off your pants!" doesn't really cut it in the "for your serious consideration" category.

Which is a cryin' shame, because we could ALL use a LOT more absurd humor in our lives! The comic character of the Tick was created by Ben Edlund. He established a theme of absurdity and ludicrous irreverence that makes you want to quote the comic, cartoon and tv show with a repetiveness that would annoy a three year old! The television show stayed true to the themes, even if some of the characters had to be changed. I thought nothing could be funnier than the pretentiousness of Die Fledermaus, until I saw Batmanuel (played with absolute perfection by Nestor Carbonell).

Basically, it comes down to: is this your kind of thing? If it is, and you're holding out because you're afraid it won't compare to the comic book or cartoon, GET IT! It's another incarnation of this hilarious group of characters and does NOT fail to deliver! C'mon, the moist hand of Destiny is at your back, and she's pushing!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - A pale, pale, lame, shade of the cartoon
It's hard to express how badly the live action Tick series sucked in comparison to the cartoon.

The live action version tried to make things more adult. Innuendo between Bat Manuel and the american-maid counterpart. The name changes were just part of the lameness.

The writing wasn't as good and the jokes weren't as funny. Warburton was the perfect casting for the Tick, but beyond that the live action series was a complete disaster.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Brilliant but Cancelled...
Highly underrated and cancelled before its time could truly come, "The Tick" is a real delight to watch, a show that is easy to laugh at whether you are a fan of the character or not. Doomed by Fox Network's program-shuffling schedule, this program did not fail on its promise to me, and still, at only nine episodes, remains one of my favorite series. The antics of the Wild Blue Yonder and his cohorts are truly memorable. There is great comic writing abound, which is beautifully delivered - especially by Patrick Warburton and Nestor Carbonell.

"Well, let's not keep her waiting. She'll only perspire and alarm the neighborhood cats."

The show, which is based strongly on the mood of Ben Edlund's comic and the character and story traits of the Fox cartoon, delivers a lot of comedic dialogue and moments, but ultimately failed in the story department. This is not to say that it wasn't still hilarity writ large, but save for the first two episodes, there really wasn't any crime fighting going on, and the show became less about the Tick than the other three leads. It turned into too much of a hormonal drama among Arthur, Captain Liberty and Batmanuel while the Tick himself got sidelined. Not many real villains appeared, with the Red Scare storyline being horribly twisted, not to mention the existence of only one ninja in the whole series. And I think a lot of viewers anxiously awaited but never received their dosage of "Keen!" and "Spoon!" that the cartoon provided.

Other than that, I think the cinematography, direction and costuming were top-notch. Any fan of Ben Edlund's creation ought to give this a try. While the DVD set is nothing to write home about, with a virtual lack of features, the picture quality is perfect and the discs themselves look pretty darn cool. And at the price it is definitely worth the buy - you'll watch these episodes over and over again, I guarantee it. My favorite is still "The Funeral" - check it out.
