Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Horrible DVD transfer
This is the WORST transfer of a movie (that is not a tape-to-tape before DVD bootleg) that I have ever seen. Many scenes in the daylight show a jiggling reflected lights, or so it appears, and lines dance around with the sound. It was so bad I thought it was in individual damaged DVD, until I read other reviews here and on IMDB.

This is far worse than most cheapie transfers that are no longer owned but are in the public domain. At least in those instances they usually have the excuse that the print they are working from is old and worn. I have a much better video of Exodus on VHS tape in EP!

And this movie is currently being offered at Amazon for $14.95. Don't bother! Tape it off TCM and you'll have a far higher quality visual record.

As for the movie itself, despite good actors and one of the most wonderful music scores, it's very flat. Kirk Douglas would have been a far better choice than Newman, who acts like he just came off a binge after a losing pool streak. Nonetheless, it should not be sold with in lousy visual copies.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - A worthy cause . . . a mediocre film
In light of the today's fraught nature of Palestinian-Israeli relations, 'Exodus' might now be regarded as politically incorrect. This would be unfortunate. The film is a useful primer on the history of the times, a commentary on a momentous period that predicted the birth of a new nation and the decline of an old one. In 1948, the year of Israel's statehood, the imperial fortunes of Britain were on the skids. A number of events, before and after this year, conspired to grease them. Not only the Jewish struggle against British intransigence, with its effects on Arab-British relationships, but independence for India and Pakistan in 1947, and the post-war consolidation of American power and influence around the world -- this mix of century-changing events obliquely informed the topical mood of this film when it was released (1960), and accorded it more importance than perhaps it deserved on its cinematic merits.

This is a motion picture with a point, but it takes too long to make its (three-and-a-half hours). In parts, and taking the charitable view, it has a documentary feel, such as scenes in hollow-sounding rooms, or the intrusion of studio shadows, that intentionally or otherwise impart realistic touches, but which take some getting used to. The acting, at best, is competent. Paul Newman is Ari Ben Canaan, the Hagganah soldier whose leadership secures passage of the refugee ship (Exodus) through the British blockade. His role is only occasionally inspiring. Eva Marie Saint, who provides the romantic interest for him, is equally ambiguous in her role as the American nurse (Kitty Fremont) who joins the Jewish cause. Supporting roles are played by Ralph Richardson as an effective and sympathetic General Sutherland; Peter Lawford, who as Major Caldwell is a self-conscious parody of an English upper-class anti-Semite; Lee J. Cobb (Barak Ben Canaan), always very Lee J. Cobb-like; and Sal Mineo, as a somewhat convincing zealot (Dov Landau), fired mainly by hatred of all who stand in the way of Jewish independence. The affable John Derek is half-hearted in the role of Taha, the sympathetic Arab mayor.

Still, this film has value as a window on the history of the mid-twentieth century -- events of a period that have fashioned the world in which we live today.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A classic film
I have loved this film since I first saw it 15 years ago. It is a classic, well done and tells an inspiring story. I highly recommend this movie and hope that anyone who purchases enjoys it as much as I have.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Exodus
Exodus is a very historically accurate movie about the famous boat "Exodus" that illegally got countless Holocaust survivors to Israel, then Palestine, and, ultimately, it is also about the creation of the State of Israel.

I believe the movie is pretty good and well thought out; all the characters are completely believable (Paul Newman was great as the main character!), and the story line and plot are great. Some scenes were very impressive, realistic, and even a bit disturbing. However, the movie is exceptionally long, and that makes the viewers lose interest on it after a while and "miss" a lot of good parts.

Still, it's a good film and definitely worth your time - if you have it! I suggest not watching the whole movie at once, but rather taking a few breaks in between, because, quite frankly, otherwise, the magic of the whole movie is lost.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Important movie
This movie is long and somewhat slow. However, that doesn't stop me from watching or liking this movie because it is full of history and drama. I am captivated by the Jewish culture and history, and seeing a nation of people just trying to get home is very touching. There is some action and some romance, but the important thing about this movie is the conflict of a people just trying to be free.

Please be patient and watch this. It is very touching and compelling.
