Looks like I'm in the minority here but I think this was an excellent film. As an owner of the original Never Ending Story Trilogy, I thought this rendition explained a lot more. This version shows what happened to Bastian's mother and why his father was the way he was. In the original films I just thought he was an unfeeling jerk! The characters here were much more interesting and the story told much more about them. It is a classic tale of good versus evil, delivered in an entertaining manner. Atreyu, The Childlike Empress and Zeide came to life for me in this version. It showed so much more of who they were, what motivated them. The special effects aren't quite Star Wars calibre but they come across very well.
All in all, I found this to be an excellent story, well-written and well-acted. Mark Rendall (Bastian) reminded me a lot of Jason James Richter (who played Bastian in The Never Ending Story III) in the original Free Willy and I thought he was a very appealing boy who gave "Bastian" a heart the other actors never achieved in the original films. In my opinion the character of Atreyu in the original films was much too young and neither actor gave the character any believability, as was the Childlike Empress. She wasn't child-like, she was a child.
After my son and I watched this, we found the the next installment, The Gift, and enjoyed it even more.

While not like the book so much, it is still a good movie. I like how they link the fantasy and real world. The acting is OK...
And there is another comment that today's kids would not like the original never ending story... I really do not feel that is justified.. Harry Potter does not spoil kids imaginiations to watch different styled films and enjoy them...
I just want to see more of the video's. It just makes me want to read the book again. Which, by the way the movie encourages: reading.

This is by far the worst rendition of The Neverending Story ever produced. This statement includes the dreadful Neverending Story 3. The screenwriting is so bland as to narratively explain every step of the story, not allowing any personal interpretation to enter. The story is manipulated to the point that names and places become merely references to objects, and not the rich allegorical themes that Ende originally intended them to be. Unlike the cartoon series, which I recommend for its attempt to visualize people and places from the book not covered by the Warner Bros. movies, this movie repeatedly copies the first two movies without any inventions of its own (except a cute character named Flygirl, but that's another story, and shall be told another time...) The majority of this movie is spent in tight, confined spaces when they would do better to reflect the broadness and grandeur of Fantastica. I most definitely would not recommend this movie.

This movie is not as bad as you guys are saying. I just watched it no more than 30 minutes ago. I thought the story was pretty good. I enjoyed it alot. I am 22 years old and a huge fan of The Neverending Story. I thought it was interesting to see a new take on the story. I enjoyed the characters in the fantasy story more than the real one, mainly because of the actors. I felt that they could have gotten a much better actor for the dad, he seemed to me to be more of a stage actor than for screen.
As for the way it left you hanging. I don't think it left me hanging anymore than "LOTR: Fellowship Of The Rings" did. I think the way it ending was in a way symbolic. The scenario in the "real world" had an ending, but the way the story in Fantasia didn't really have closure was to symbolize the fact that it's the "Neverending" story. I think it's definatly worth seeing.

Please heed my words and avoid this movie! Michael Ende's novel "The Neverending Story" is my all-time favorite book, and I believe to be one of the most original and inspiring fantasies ever written. But this... THIS adaptation of it is an outrage! "They" have altered Ende's ideals to appeal to a brain-washed Potter-crazed society! For example, the befreckled redhead, Bastian, has two close friends - a black-haired bespectacled boy, and a frizzy-haired brunette girl. Together, they engage in outrageous and downright ridiculous escapades between classes at their middle school... how much lower can you get? Ende set out to write a story which could stand by itself as a completely original story. And now it has been raped and twisted into this abomination! Please - PLEASE - do not support it by purchasing it! If you do, trust me, it will only end up on eBay. READ THE BOOK... thanks.
