Ohhhh....I LOVE this CD and I never even knew who Tom Wopat was! I was wowed when I saw him perform "Baby, It's Cold Outside" with Antonia Bennett on the "Today Show." We want more, Tom!

Tom Wopat's THE STILL OF THE NIGHT starts with an easy swinging "Let's Fall in Love" and that's the second surprise on this album. The first is that it is classified as country. Wopat's voice is rich, romantic, and meltingly sweet, with a hint of Steve Tyrell's growl--a nice voice for a jazz singer.
Granted, at times, listening to this album is a little like reading a letter home from a beloved cousin. He's been away a long time. He's homesick. You cherish every word. He sends a "hello" to his country cousins with "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress" and "If These Walls Could Talk"--and a very nice "hello" it is. He gets playful with Gus Kahn`s "Makin' Whoopie;" although he presents a decidedly more sophisticated version than Eddie Cantor's.
In other places he really gets up close and personal. You care about this guy. His searching "Where Is Love" and his wistful "Anyone Can Whistle" touch your heart. He might be singing "Where or When" in your ear. His heartache on Hoagy Carmichael's haunting "I Get Along Without You Very Well" makes you miss him--or maybe just miss somebody.
The arrangements and orchestrations are excellent, unobtrusive, and suit the easy, mellow tone of this album very well. The piano that follows Wopat throughout obviously loves him. (For examples of this remarkable relationship, hear the samples on Amazon.com." ) Wopat's voice is warm and intimate. Nobody ever before made me want to listen to "Ruby."
This album is a nice surprise. Wopat has a tender, appealing way about him. One hopes he keeps surprising us, maybe with an album of standards. We could use another good singer saving our heritage of lyrics and melodies we can understand. And Tom Wopat is definitely a good singer.

From the lawns and babes of Hazzard to the bright lights of Broadway....to this essential masterpiece, Wopat's talent boggles the mind in its originality and brilliance. Not since Wopat's partner-in-crime Bob Schneider released an album has there been such cause for jubilation. And here I thought this backwoods hick only performed country songs!! I feel ashamed of myself for stereotyping this Hazzard hick, because he really can carry a tune. Half Sinatra, half Schneider, Wopat croons with a sultry sincerity not heard since the days of prime-time Johnny Cash on ABC.
I don't know, I just never thought this young man had it in him to be a pop/country star, but it shows what I know - NOT MUCH!!
If only Hogg and Roscoe would collaborate on a unified effort at essential music, like the gifted Wopat did. Perhaps all the folks from Hazzard can get together soon and bless us with their musical chops....one can only pray.
Please don't miss this essential Wopat, and please have a pleasant day...

Tom Wopat has always been a very likeable guy and to tell you the truth, I wae really looking forward to this CD considering the choice of selections. Starting with the packaging I was very impressed with the presentation. I had seen him perform on the Tonys and thought he was having a ball, if not quiet on pitch with his fellow performers. I had heard he was performing in several Broadway productions and cabarets recently and assumed he had gotten much more comfortable with singing. Unfortunatly, unlike fine wine, he has not improved with age. I would probably go see him in a play but as far as musicals go, I don't see how he could be a selling point. His voice quality has none and the delivery seems tenative and frail. The arrangements seem to be meant for a strong singer that would enhance them. The man should stick to talk shows and acting because he has now proved that anyone can sing---but should they?

A better title would have been "Songs/Voice to fall in Love With." Okay, so his tone isn't as smooth as Harry Connick Jr or Mel Torme, but he's got a very Tony Bennett-esque quality (with a little bit of edge, giving it an interesting color - not as bland as some 'pretty' singers) that makes this very, VERY listenable. The arrangements are wonderful - how often do you get to hear the second verse to 'Makin' Whoopie'? and 'I Get Along Without You Very Well' is just haunting. The album is a great cross between lounge-jazz and classic cabaret. Great for a romantic evening in front of the fire with a nice chianti and your lover!
